Bending Machine for Orthodontic Archwires

Problem Statement Project Objectives Test & Evaluation Index 3 Design Process 5 6 Final Product History Log

Why is it expensive to have Orthodontic Instruments? In this page, we are trying to find out the reasons. Components Technique Expert (Dentist) Apparatus Bracket Orthodontic Archwires Patents Monopoly on technique Problem Statement 1 Dental clinic

We decide to change the Current Situation No precede Korean technical development and patent, yet. Problem Statement 1 In USA and Europe there exist Bending Machines for Orthodontic Archwires. To Design a Bending Machine To Develop Local Techniques

Why have we chosen this subject? These followings are the reasons we have chosen the topic. Project Objectives 2 Designing a Bending Machine in our own way I.Less Expensive Product II.Local Production Makes Possibilities

Project Objectives These are the objectives we will accomplish. Project Objectives

Project Objectives Project Objectives 2 Linear motion Rotation Bending Wire 3 DOFs are needed for wire bending I. 3 degrees of freedom

Project Objectives Project Objectives 2 Computer (LabVIEW) Processor (FPGA) Motor operation II. Simple program to operation (LabVIEW)

Project Objectives Project Objectives 2 III. High quality product CompetitorsObjectives Minimum bending length 2.2mm (Orametrix, USA) Less than 2mm Bending angle error less than 0.8 degree (Orametrix, USA) (experiment need) Bending time 40 seconds (Orametrix, USA) Less than 40 seconds Available wire shape round and square (Orametrix, USA), square (3M, Germany) round and square

3. Design Process 1)Concept Development&Analysis 2) Concept Selection 3) Manufacturing Hardware 4) Developing Software

Concept Development & Analysis This page is about Our initial design concept and its development. Design Process 3 Linear motion Rotation Bending Wire

Concept Selection This page is about the bending part. Design Process 3 Ideas for Actuation Part Bending in 2 ways → to realize 3D product (X) design of the lower driving part = difficult Idea. A

Concept Selection This page is about the bending part. Design Process 3 Ideas for Actuation Part Idea. B Grabs for holding a wire Bending (X) limitation: not able to 3Dproduct

Concept Selection This page is about the bending part. Design Process 3 Ideas for Actuation Part Idea. C Grabs for holding a wire Bending Rolling This type satisfy all of required functions

Concept Selection This page is about the bending part. Design Process 3 Ideas for Bending Part

Concept Selection This page is about the bending part. Design Process 3 Ideas for Bending Part 1) Consideration - Force - Accuracy - Simplicity (Price, Space)

Concept Selection This page is about the bending part. We confirmed that the step motor offers sufficient force for bending wires. Design Process 3 Spec 5 phases, 0.072deg/phase 3.64V, 1.4A 20N*m holding torque 1:10 gear ratio

Concept Selection This page is about the bending part. Among three concepts, we had to select the one after the consideration about simplicity and accuracy. Design Process 3 Three ideas for bending part Using hole Using clamp Using pin**

Concept Development Finally, pins and guides are used for bending parts. Design Process 3 Guides Pins Engaging part of the Pin and the Motor Wire Motor Installing the two Guides in order to allow for bi-directional bending

Manufacturing Hardware Stage This is our final design of bending machine. Design Process 3

Manufacturing Hardware Stage This picture shows our assembled bending machine. Design Process 3

Manufacturing Stage We are working on developing codes using Labview. Design Process 3 1. Initialization 2. Check 3d graph, first slope 3. Tuning the property of bending wire (company, shape, thickness)

Manufacturing Stage We are working on developing codes using Labview. Design Process 3 Make pulses by bending point data Monitoring by array 1. Using first slope and data of bending point make pulse 2. The pulse go next step *Can monitoring

Manufacturing Stage We are working on developing codes using Labview. Design Process 3 Control in FPGA 1. Linear motion, roll, bending in FPGA 2. Control motors by pulses

Why is it required to have tests? Because of Spring-back effect, test is required. Test & Evaluation 4 By experiment, we need to figure out spring-back coefficient. Measure the angle while pulse is increasing.

We did the experiment. Test & Evaluation 4 Fitted function We considered pulse(input signal) and bent angle(output). These kind of experiments were conducted by Protractor. (instead of microscope because of the situation of a corporation) In final presentation, this slide would filled with experiment data.

After Assembling of the machine, we manufactured wires. Accuracy is very important as well as simple structure. However, errors occured. Test & Evaluation 4 Checking the Accuracy by comparison Graph of desired data ~ Bent wire on the test Good Accuracy - Desired accuracy Bad Accuracy - Visible error - Summation of error occur summation of error start from here

We got better accuracy after spring-back test. Test & Evaluation 4 The bent wire and the graph exactly match together. (good accuracy) This result need to be verified by microscope.

Bending Machine for Orthodontic archwires Maybe, Demonstration or Simulation Video will be shown here. Final Product 5
