Exploring a film still As you take your seat you must explore the mise-en- scene in the film still I have given you. Consider and write brief bullet points for the following: Settings / locations / backgrounds Props Costume Hair and make-up Facial expression and body language/posturing Lighting and colour Positioning of characters/objects within a frame (foregrounding / back-grounding) Comment on why the director has made these choices and how it might develop the narrative Make notes on all the aspects and then write one section out in full in exam style. [10 mins]

Time to be geeky! For the same still, you must now explore camerawork, sound and editing. Imagine that you are directing the next scene after your still and make notes on what camera angles you would use (including movement and composition), then what sound you would add to make the scene more realistic and finally comment on how you would edit the transition. Be prepared to share in five minutes [10 mins]

TV sub-genre In your pairs, note down all of the different sub-genres you can think of. Race to beat the rest of the class! Possible ideas: teen drama; police/crime drama; period drama; hospital drama; soap opera; docu-drama, fantasy dramas which offer escapism etc [5 mins - both slides]

Creative task Still in your pairs, you will now be assigned one of the sub- genres of TV drama from the last slide. Your task is to create an imagined scene from a programme (real or invented) from your assigned sub-genre, applying your knowledge of Mise en Scène to reflect what an audience would expect to see in that kind of programme. Use the computers to complete an image collage or mood board of everything you would put in the mise-en-scene and even create a still/snapshot of a scene similar to the ones we explored at the start of the lesson. You will have twenty minutes and must then be prepared to share. [20 mins]

Mise-en-scene gallery As a group, we will now travel around the room to explore each others’ mise-en-scene creations! When it is your turn to share, remember to justify your choices and make specific reference to all of the key features of this final technical area. [10-15 mins]
