Branches of Government Study Guide Vocabulary Council – A group of people elected to make rules and solve problems Election – The process in which a citizen votes for people to represent them. Executive Branch – The branch of government that signs laws. Governor – A person who signs or vetoes laws for the state government. Judicial Branch – The branch of the national government that is headed by the Supreme Court. Legislative Branch – The branch of government that makes the laws. Mayor – A person who heads a local government or community. Separation of Powers – Power divided between the three branches of government. Tax – Money paid to the government.

The three different levels of government are national, state, and local. Taxes paid to the local government help pa for schools. The local government has 3 branches. The leaders of those branches are the city council, the courts, and the mayor. The three responsibilities of a governor are to carry out laws, veto laws, and sign laws. The General Assembly is divided into two parts: The Senate and the House of Representatives. Congress is the leader of the national government’s legislative branch. Most of our government buildings look like buildings from Athens, Greece. Citizens pay taxes to the government so that the government can provide us with services such as schools, police and fire departments, libraries, and the military. It is important that the branches of government have separation of powers so that one person or group within the government doesn’t get too much power. In a direct democracy, citizens get together as a group to vote on laws that concern them. In a representative democracy, citizens vote for leaders to make laws and decisions for them. The name of the building the Athens, Greece that our Supreme Court is made to look like is the Parthenon.
