During the s, Western influence penetrated East Asia and forced nations like Japan and China to face the problems posed by the Western campaign of industrialization and imperialism. A NICE INTRO!

Both the Chinese and Japanese governments faced rebellions and are weakened or formed as a result. But, while China resisted Western influence and culture, Japan’s government embraced and encouraged the spread of Western technology and culture. Furthermore, China was taken over by foreign influence and by 1900 was weak and unable to control its foreigners, while Japan became a major East Asian power recognized as a modern industrial nation with its own sphere of influence.

While both China and Japan experienced encroachment by western powers, Japan embraced Westernization while China rejected it, especially in terms of military, where Japan modernized and China failed to do so. However, they had a similar aspect; both nations were forced to sign unequal treaties.

In the 19 th century China and Japan both responded to W. encroachment by having rebellions. However, China’s response to Western attempts at repression led to chaos while Japan’s kept peace and China did not make many industrial advancements, while Japan became a leading industrialized power.

To counteract the Western powers, both Japan and China signed unequal treaties. However, after the treaties China unsuccessfully resisted nearly all Western influences and fell behind while Japan tried to Westernize itself, leading to its successful competition with Europe and its own sphere of influence.

In the 19 th century the industrialized, militarily strong West was becoming very influential in the East. The rise of Western power caused many internal struggles in both Japan and China. In the end, China rejected the W. influence and was weakened, while Japan accepted the influence, adapted, and gained strength.
