Hazing North East ISD Madison High School

What is hazing? Any intentional, knowing, or reckless act…..by one person alone or acting with others, directed against a student, that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student for the purpose of pledging, being initiated into, affiliating with, or holding office in an organization.

Any type of physical brutality, such as whipping, beating, striking, branding, electronic shocking, placing of a harmful substance on the body, or similar activity.

Any activity involving: consumption of a food, liquid, alcoholic beverage, liquor, drug, or other substance that subjects the student to an unreasonable risk of harm or that adversely affects the mental or physical health or safety of the student

Any activity that: intimidates or threatens the student with ostracism, that subjects the student to extreme mental stress, shame, or humiliation, that adversely affects the mental health or dignity of the student or discourages the student from entering or remaining registered in an educational institution, or that may be reasonably be expected to cause a student to leave the organization or the institution rather than submit to acts described.

What could happen if I choose to Haze? You will be subject to to disciplinary action Suspended Alternative Educational Placement Expulsion Probation Removal from Extra Curricular Activities

Any employee who has knowledge of and/or allows, initiates, or promotes hazing will be subject to disciplinary action up to include and including termination.

ACTS OF HAZING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!!!

ACTS OF BULLYING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!!!

Students are entitled to enjoy the basic rights of citizenship recognized and protected by law for persons of their age and maturity.

What is bullying? Isolation Belittling Demeaning Patronizing someone- especially in front of others Status Value Self-Worth Bullying is constant attempts to undermine another’s

Bullying is…….. Constant nit-picking Fault-finding Criticism Harassing Another Directing Verbal and/or physical assaults toward another person Discriminating against someone Stalking Another Committing Aggressive Acts Against Another

In general terms, “bullying” is about trying to get power over another person Don’t Do It!! It Will NOT Be Tolerated!!!!

Hazing is limited to students who are at least 10 years of age. False! Hazing can take place only on campus or at a school sponsored activity off campus. False!

Hazing is any intentional, knowing or reckless act directed against a student for the purpose of pledging, initiation, affiliating with or holding office in an organization True!

Hazing always endangers the physical health or safety of one or more students. False! Acts of hazing can occur only during the school day.

All of the following would be considered acts of hazing if the act subjects a student to unreasonable risk of harm or adversely affects the physical health or safety: whipping, branding, electric shock, placing a harmful substance on the body, exposure to the elements, True!! confinement to a small space, calisthenics, consumption of food, alcoholic beverage or drugs

All of the following would be considered acts of hazing if the act adversely affects the mental health or dignity of a student: Intimidation or threats of ostracism, extreme mental stress, shame or humiliation True!

Causing a student to participate in any violation of the Texas Penal Code is an act of hazing. True! Any form of hazing is a violation of the NEISD Student Code of Conduct and the NEISD Board Policy but not a violation of a Texas law. False!

All of the following are illegal in Texas: Engaging in, soliciting, encouraging, direct, aids or attempts to aid others in hazing, recklessly permitting hazing, having first hand knowledge of the planning of hazing or actual occurrence of hazing and knowingly failing to report it in writing. True!
