LONG ISLAND SEWERS

WHAT ARE THE TWO TYPES OF SEWERS? SEWER PIPES AND STORM DRAINS

1. SEWER PIPES FROM HOMES WHAT ARE THE TWO TYPES OF SEWERS? Carries human waste and detergents and household cleaners, etc.

WHERE DOES THE SEWAGE GO? SEWER PIPES FROM YOUR HOMES AND BUSINESSES LEAD TO SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANTS.

HOW IS SEWAGE TREATED? 1.SCREENS 2.SETTLING TANK 3.SOLIDS TO A SLUDGE TANK 4.DRYING LAGOON 5.DRIED SLUDGE IS RECYCLED. OR 1.SCREENS 2.SETTLING TANK 3.WATER TO A BIOLOGICAL FILTER 4.SETTLING TANK 5.LAGOON AND TO A WATERWAY

HOW IS SEWAGE TREATED? 1.SCREENS CATCH LARGE DEBRIS THAT GOT PUT DOWN A DRAIN/TOILET. 2.SETTLING TANKS ALLOW SOLID PARTICLES TO SINK TO THE BOTTOM. 3.SOLIDS ARE SENT TO SLUDGE TANKS AND DRYING LAGOONS. 4.DRIED SLUDGE IS RECYCLED AS FERTILIZER OR DISPOSED OF AS GARBAGE. 5.WASTE WATER IS FILTERED AND TREATED TO KILL MICROORGANISMS. CHEMICALS ARE NOT REMOVED. 6.TREATED WATER IS RELEASED INTO NEARBY WATERWAYS.

WHAT ARE THE TWO TYPES OF SEWERS? 2. STORM SEWERS FROM ROADS STORM DRAINS LEAD TO “SUMPS” OR WATERWAYS.

“SUMPS” ARE DRAINAGE BASINS FOR ROADWAYS. WATER TRANSPORTED THERE WILL SEEP INTO THE GROUND.

STORM SEWERS ALSO DRAIN TO LOCAL WATERWAYS. TRANSPORTING ANYTHING IN THE STREET WITH IT. OIL, SALT, FERTILIZERS, GASOLINE, TIRE AND BRAKE RESIDUE, PET WASTE, CIGARETTES, LEAVES, ETC.

WHAT ARE ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO DISPOSE OF HOUSEHOLD WASTE? IJK ;-)

WHAT ARE ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO DISPOSE OF HOUSEHOLD SEWAGE? SEPTIC TANKS AND CESSPOOLS COLLECT WASTE AND USE BACTERIA TO BREAK IT DOWN. TREATED WATER IS RELEASED INTO THE GROUND.

SUMMARY: HOUSEHOLD SEWAGE MUST BE TREATED BEFORE THE WATER CAN BE RETURNED TO THE ENVIRONMENT. STORMS DRAINS SHOULD LEAD TO DRAINAGE BASINS SO HARMFUL POLLUTANTS ARE KEPET OUT OF WATERWAYS. TAKE CARE WHAT YOU PUT DOWN ANY DRAIN... MOST OF THEM ON LONG ISLAND LEAD TO A WATERWAY.
