Making a teaching curriculum What elements should be taken into consideration ? Randi Beier-Holgersen MD, MHPE WHO-CC

Purpose Implementing health promotion in hospitals, 4th STANDARD: Promoting a Healthy Workplace Objective: To support the development of a healthy and safe workplace, and to support health promotion activities of staff.

A “teaching” curriculum? What do you think a curriculum is? ( 2 minutes discussion) In formal education, a curriculum is the planned interaction of pupils with instructional content, materials, resources, and processes for evaluating the attainment of educational objectives. From Latin curriculum (“course”), derived from currō (“run, move quickly”).

Questions to be made when making a curriculum Why this curriculum? To whom? – barriers /enhancements What to be learned? How – pedagogical principles ? Where – the context? How to assess? Exams - tests - reflection ?

Substandard: 4.3 The organization ensures availability of procedures to develop and maintain staff awareness on health issues Policies for awareness on health issues are available for staff Smoking cessation programmes are offered Annual staff surveys are carried out including an assessment of individual behaviour, knowledge on supportive services/policies, and use of supportive seminars

Behind every standard…. ……must be an action plan (curriculum) to make sure that everyone (member of staff) has knowledge and training to fulfil and to use the standard in the way it is meant.

Part 1 Make of an action plan / a curriculum for one of the sub-standards in your hospital/health service Why this curriculum? Choose one of the group member`s workplace To whom? – barriers /enhancements – Who are interested? Discuss pros / cons What to be learned? Learning goals 30 minutes – presentation 5 minutes

Part 2 Make of an action plan / a curriculum for one of the sub-standards in your hospital/health service How – pedagogical principles/teaching strategies? Self-studying, group work, PBL, reflective assignments etc. Where – the context? Courses, workplace, home, other? Responsible and timeframe How to assess? Exams - tests - reflection ? Expected result 30 minutes – presentation 5 minutes
