> 1 Using Word to Create Posters Faculty of Health Alan Grace

> 2 Overview  Introduction  Large fonts  Changing the font size  Landscape  Margins  Images  Also look at the Diagram presentation

> 3 Introduction  A poster is too large to create in Word  You can create parts of the poster and then paste them on the cardboard  Use a Glue stick instead of glue! (to help prevent wrinkles)  You can write the text in Word  You can also use ClipArt or search for images on the Internet

> 4 Large fonts  You can make your letters as large as you like  I once made a Happy Birthday banner with one letter per page  Think of a font size of 12 as one line high, 24 as two lines, …  Therefore a letter 2.5 cms high (one inch) is about a font size of 72 (6 lines to the inch)  10 cms (4 inches) would be about a font size of 290 (say 300)  This allows for a bit of space above and below the letter  The actual height depends on the font  Print out a sample and make your own measurements!

> 5 Changing the font size  Normal size writing has a font size of 12  If you click on this number (12 in the formatting toolbar) in Word, you can type in any number you like (e.g. 300)  Once text is typed in, you must highlight (select) it before you can change the size  Once the text is highlighted, you can click the font size and type in a new number  Or press Ctrl+] to increase the size (hold down the Control key and keep tapping the right square bracket- next to Enter on a normal keyboard)  Or press Ctrl+[ to decrease the size

> 6 Landscape  Even if each word is done individually, some words may be too long to fit on a page  How can you do a heading ‘Auckland University of Technology’ in large letters?  First you can put the page in Landscape so that it is wider  In Word, click on File, Page Setup, Paper size (top of the screen), then choose Landscape  You may even need to make the margins smaller (see next slide)  You may also need two pages for one word ‘Techn’ +’ology’  In this case the whole word may fit together by right justifying the left half (first page) and left justifying the right half (second page)

> 7 Margins  You can fit more on one page if the margins are small  In Word, click on File, Page setup, Margins (this should be the default) then change the left, right, top, and bottom margins to 1 cm or maybe.5 cm (depending on your printer)  If you get a message saying that the margins are too small for the page, click on Fix

> 8 Images  You can also add ClipArt  Click on Insert, Picture, ClipArt to do this  You can make a picture larger by clicking on the picture, then dragging the bottom right hand corner to make the image larger  Remember that photos may become fuzzy or chunky if they are made too big  You can also use the drawing toolbar for circles, rectangles, arrows etc (click on View, Toolbars, Drawing if this toolbar is not visible)  You can also do a search for images in Google ( and click on Images (above the box where you type in your keyword)

> 9 This is the End!  This presentation will play again until you press the ESC key on the top right of the keyboard! Good luck with your computing!
