Social Sciences and Humanities Revised Curriculum Introducing the Revised Curriculum

Learning Goals In this workshop we are learning to… Understand the innovations in the revised curriculum To plan instruction which embeds research and inquiry skills Understand how a variety of teaching methods (literacy, collaborative strategies, critical thinking) can be used to teach the revised curriculum

Group Résumé 1.Group Name 2.Background: role, experience 3.Interests/ Hobbies 4.Some things you might guess about us 5.Some things that might surprise you 6.Signatures Group Résumé protocol from : Lipton, Laura, and Bruce M. Wellman. Groups at Work: Strategies and Structures for Professional Learning. Lost Acre Trail Sherman, CT: MiraVia, Print.Groups at Work: Strategies and Structures for Professional Learning.

Agenda Minds on: What’s new in the revised curriculum? Action 1: Decoding the revised curriculum Action 2: Develop an inquiry task Consolidation: Ideas exchange and exit card

Minds On TED Talk: Gever Tully What works in this classroom? What works in engaged classrooms in general?

Group Discussion How do ‘making mistakes’ and ‘doing things’ relate to the inquiry model in the Social Sciences?

Unpacking the Front Matter Are the ideas that were generated in the group discussion present in the revised curriculum? Return to your initial partner and highlight any examples you find in the document you’ve been given

Action Part 1: Decoding the Curriculum Texts to Consider Curriculum orientation page Inquiry model diagram Say Something Strategy Make a connection Ask a question Make a comment Clarify meaning

Research & Inquiry Skills 1.Code the Text – Continuation and Change 2.Inside Outside Circles Protocol 3.Group debrief

Action Part 2: Develop an Inquiry Task 1.Select the Research & Inquiry Skill area you would like to work on: Exploring Investigating Processing Communicating Go to the corresponding corner 2. Once in groups, select a ‘critical friend’ with whom to work 3. Create a task using one of the texts provided based on the revised curriculum

Success Criteria for Inquiry Task Teaches and uses the chosen inquiry skill Meets at least one other revised curriculum expectation from one of the other strands Engages students in a meaningful way

Consolidation: Ideas Exchange Give One Get One Protocol 1.Write a one sentence summary of the task you created on your card 2.Find someone you haven’t spoken to yet – both people share their ideas 3.Write down the new idea on your card 4.Find someone new with whom to share and repeat the process

Exit Card Think about the questions you completed as you entered the room today… 1.Did your dot move? In what way? 2.Were your questions addressed? 3.Will you leave with what you need to implement the changes in the revised curriculum?
