INQUIRY AND CRITICAL THINKING
What is inquiry??? Simply put…. CRITICAL THINKING….
WHAT Does it look like? Inquiry in the classroom is: - Teacher Driven -Teacher poses interesting, open ended questions to draw students into content - Teacher follows up with probing questions to guide students into deeper levels of thought
Using open-ended questioning is key to authentic inquiry as it models the value of considering multiple perspectives and answers.
What about the students??? Inquiry in the classroom is ALSO student driven. Students need to learn to PROBE the various meanings of the text in order to reach higher- level understanding AND interpretations. Inquiry skills need to be deliberately and strategically taught to students in steps so that they can become aware of their own cognitive processing.
