Terms Relating to Language and Literature

Introduction This list will introduce you to a number of widely used literary terms, or words used to talk about language and literature. When we say literary terms, we mean ideas that are useful when discussing or analyzing a piece of literature. Yet literary terms are also applicable when we wish to describe situations that come up in everyday life. We encounter irony not only in an English class but also when the math teacher make more computational errors than all her students combined!

Words in Context The following exercise will help you figure out the meaning of some words from the vocabulary list by reading context clues. After you have read and understood the paragraph, explain the context clues that helped you with the meaning of the vocabulary word. Words in Context Tip: Some people learn best by doing. Try writing a short poem or story using some of the concepts in this list. Seeing them in action will help you memorize the words.
