So what’s the differance???

Quotations must be exactlyQuotations must be exactly like the original text. You must put quotation marksYou must put quotation marks around the quote! QUOtING From A TEXT

You must give credit to the original author.

Example of Quotes “I have a dream” --Martin Luther King, Jr.

Summarizing involves putting the main idea of the WHOLE ARTICLE into your own words.Summarizing involves putting the main idea of the WHOLE ARTICLE into your own words. SUMMARIZING A TEXT

Summaries are much shorter than the original and take an overview of the material.

You CAN summarize a whole book or a whole series of books!

So what’s the difference between paraphrasing and summarizing???

Paraphrasing is putting a section from the original material into your own words. PARAPHRASING A TEXT

You must cite the original material here also and give credit to the author. Example of a works cited page: Adams, Paul. "Furious Arafat Is Freed." Globe and Mail [Toronto] 2 May 2002: A1+.Adams, Paul. "Furious Arafat Is Freed." Globe and Mail [Toronto] 2 May 2002: A1+.

Paraphrased material is usually shorter than the original passage. It takes an overview of the whole topic.

Could you paraphrase the whole Harry Potter series?

But you could paraphrase one scene or section, such as t he scene where Harry buys his first wand.

You turn….try paraphrasing these sentences in your own words. (Make sure to reorder the sentence too!) Ex: The automobile is chartreuse. - There was a yellow-greenish car 1.Preparations for the ceremony were elaborate. 2.In the metropolis, the recreational area was dilapidated. 3.The educator removed the unruly student from the class environment.

Paraphrasing a whole section of an article Article from the AJC:Article from the AJC: All the teachers at Lilburn Elementary will be attending a lecture on Thursday at the University of Georgia. The famous author, J. K. Rowling will be speaking to the elementary teachers and staff. The lecture will conclude with an autograph session and a reception in the auditorium. This conference will be sponsored by The Steven Spielberg Council for Under Appreciated School Librarians, and each librarian attending will receive the entire set of novels by J. K. Rowling, including a preview of her new book, Mystery in the Under Staffed Media Center.
