Student Led Conferences Session # 1 1 st : Log on to your laptop (turn your laptops to face me when you are ready) 2 nd : Take out  Pencil 3 rd : Wait for further instructions Today I am learning the benefits of student- led conferencing, taking a Learning Style Inventory and starting my PowerPoint. So I can determine my learning style preferences and find out how I might learn best and begin my goal setting. I will know I am successful when I Can explain the purpose for SLC Complete the online Learning Style Inventory Copy and paste “snip” of my Learning Style preferences in my PPT on slide #3 Complete slide #2 of my PPT

What is student-led conferencing? Students will conduct formal conferences with their parents to display their schoolwork and discuss: What students are learning Goals for each class How students plan to meet their goals.

Students take ownership of their learning. Students learn to set goals and work towards them. Student work becomes more focused. Students have the opportunity to develop presentation skills. Benefits for Students

Learning Styles Inventory

Logging In To Naviance Today we will use an online resource called Naviance to complete a survey that will help you think about how you learn best. This will become part of your SLC Presentation This program is also what you will use down the road to complete your Culminating Project in high school! Also, this tool has lots of information about careers and colleges that you will be able to use. Go to Meridian’s school website and then click on the tab called Naviance on the left side to open the login window.

Log in using your regular sign in sn Use your normal login name Your password is your birthday with 8 digits mmddyyyy even if you have changed your password on Skyward or for your computer log in

You’re going to do the Learning Styles Inventory Click here to start the Learning Styles Inventory, which will help you explore how you learn best.

Now click here

One more click…

Last click…I promise!

Answer each question by clicking on the lightbulb. It will automatically take you to the next question. You cannot skip questions. Try not to click Undecided too much AND be consistent in your answers since some of the questions are a lot alike. If you are not consistent or you click Undecided too much, it will make you retake the Inventory to get your results.

When you’re done, you’ll see a report like this that gives you some info on how you learn and work best. You will be copying this into your SLC PowerPoint by using the Snipping tool. Click on “View Full Report” to get even more details and information about your Learning Style.

The top part will have the same chart as you just saw…

…but as you scroll down, it will give you more explanation of each section, as well as suggestions.

Naviance Learning Styles Inventory If you don’t quite finish, it’s ok. It will pick up where you left off when you log in next. Next week, we will be doing a Career Interest Survey. Both of these will become part of your SLC Presentation. You will use the Snipping Tool to copy the reports into your SLC PowerPoint.

To take a “snip”: Click your start button The snip tool looks like scissors with a red circle. Once you click it, the screen will automatically gray out & give you a “cross” cursor. Click & drag that cross to make a box around your results. The “snip” will automatically open up as an image when you release your click/drag mouse. Right click and copy the snip. Paste your snip onto slide #3

Turn & Talk Share with a partner 1 of your Learning preferences that is a Strength and 1 that is a Challenge

Goals

Big Mountain vs Small steps

Turn & Talk 1.Describe SLCs; what does Meridian hope students learn by participating in SLCs 2. Explain the difference between “Big Mountain Goals” & “Small steps”.

Your presentation to your parents: The PowerPoint template Template = the skeleton; just the bones… you add the meat. Template/PPT typing & rules: Do not change font, color, backgrounds or graphics yet! Only work on the slides for which you are given directions & permission, you wouldn’t want to have to undo/redo anything. Read the template, type your answers and information THEN delete the examples or directions. Type as little as possible on the slide. Summaries & goals are the only sentences! All the rest are just bulleted ideas you will expand upon when you present. You will add details & complete ideas so you will know what to say during your presentation at conferences on November 24th! (NO slide should look as full of text as this one does!! Your parents will stop reading!)

A little about me as a student Last year… Now I know… Learning Style Inventory Strengths Challenges Big Mountain This is the same as Slide #2 on Your SLC PowerPoint. Complete these sentence starters on Your Slide # 2 of your SLC PP and then delete the template starts. You will share more details and information on these topics during your Nov. 24 presentation at conferences. The next slide has a completed example.
