Jesus’ Teaching - Agape Learning Objective: To understand Jesus’ teachings on love. I can define the term agape love. I can explain the parable of the Good Samaritan. I can apply the parable to the modern day.

What do we mean by the word love? Watch the clip and think about how you would define the term ‘love’. Think, pair, share. Love is… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAD2_MVMUlE

Do we love things in the same way? What do you love? Draw a heart in your books and write inside it all of the things you love in life. Do we love things in the same way? When they have finished pose the question pose the question – do we love things in the same way? Draw out the idea that in the English language we only have one word for love so it covers a number of different meanings – but in he Greek language they had 4 words for love.

Different Types of Love Philia Love for friends and family. Eros Romantic love, e.g. boyfriend/girlfriend. What do we mean by compassionate love? It is about wanting to remove/reduce the suffering of someone – even if you don’t know them. You expect nothing in return. Storge Love for objects. Agape Compassionate/ selfless love. Now go back and colour code the things you love with the different types of love.

Agape Love Some people didn’t understand what Jesus meant by agape love. So, Jesus taught his followers by telling them the Parable of the Good Samaritan to help them understand. Keyword: Agape Showing compassionate and selfless love to someone. Showing compassion is about wanting to remove someone’s suffering, even a total stranger. You expect nothing in return. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fO4qSAhI1sI

What did Jesus mean when he said: Agape Love What did Jesus mean when he said: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ What type of love is Jesus referring to? Who showed agape love in the parable? Students need to record in books a brief summary of the parable and an explanation of ‘love your neighbour as yourself’.

Jesus’ Teaching - Agape Learning Objective: To understand Jesus’ teachings on love. I can define the term agape love. I can explain the parable of the Good Samaritan. How confident out of 5 do you feel in explaining agape love and the parable?

Jesus’ Teaching in the Modern Day Jesus taught his commandment of ‘love your neighbour as yourself’ 2000 years ago, so how is it still being used in the modern day? Each group is going to be given a modern day Good Samaritan story. You need to read through your story as a group and be ready to summarise your story and explain how it is an example of agape love.

Rainbow Groups Each person in your group is now going to be given a different colour card. You now need to join up with all of the people in the room who have the same colour card as you. You will then feedback your story to your new group – remember they won’t have heard your story yet so your explanations need to be clear!

Rainbow Groups Now you have heard all of the stories, discuss as a group which one in your favourite and why.

Watch the trailer for the film ‘Pay it Forward’. Reflection Time Whatever our own personal beliefs we can all try to be more compassionate in our daily lives. Watch the trailer for the film ‘Pay it Forward’. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pCtXRP1edo
