American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Portland “Life’s a Beach – Sun, Fun and Relay” July 17 th and 18 th Willamette Park

History of Relay 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma colorectal surgeon spent 24 hours circling the track to run/jog/bike more than 83 miles and personally raised $27,000 to fight cancer. In 1986, 19 teams in Tacoma took part in the first team relay event and raised $33,000. Relay For Life was declared the Society’s signature activity in During the last 25 years, Relay For Life has spread to 5,000 communities in the U.S. and 20 foreign countries. Today there are over 3.5 Million people who Relay!

The Mission The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community- based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. The Philosophy – Why We Relay The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated. Why Relay

The Event… Relay For Life is an overnight event that is between 12 and 24 hours in length. Much of the time is spent listening to music, camping out, participating in family activities, and making new friends. Luminaria, in memory of or in honor of someone who has been touched by cancer, are placed around the track and lit during an emotional ceremony at 10:00 p.m. An overnight format gives everyone with busy schedules the opportunity to come to the event. Themed laps, entertainment, and games throughout Relay make for a party atmosphere. Why overnight? Because cancer never sleeps!

One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. The funds raised at Relay save lives by funding cutting-edge cancer research, early detection and prevention education, advocacy efforts, and life-affirming patient services. With your involvement we are able to save lives, help those battling cancer, empower all to fight back against the disease, and reach the 2015 Goals: 50% reduction in deaths from cancer (5 million lives) 25% reduction in incidence of cancer (6 million lives) Improved quality of life for those diagnosed with cancer Why get involved?

More than two-thirds of all cancer deaths are preventable. A critical part of our work is to teach people how to maintain healthy lifestyles and get regular checkups. The American Cancer Society can help anyone touched by cancer find the information or quality-of-life programs they need. Help is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, by calling ACS-2345 or visiting The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated. Why get involved?

Register as a Survivor All Survivors (anyone who has faced a cancer diagnosis) are invited to join us as our honorary guests in the Survivors Victory Lap, which opens the Relay For Life. Survivors’ strength and courage help the community see that cancer survivorship is real – that we are making progress in the battle against cancer. We applaud survivor’s courage and strength and want them to join our community’s effort to take up the fight against cancer. They can register as a fund-raising team member or simply register as a survivor. Either way is fine! We need survivor’s help to truly impact our mission of eliminating cancer as a major health problem. Are you a cancer survivor?

Donate What do Relay Dollars Support Research: The ACS is the largest source of non-profit, non- government cancer research funding in the U.S., investing about $130 million each year. ACS has funded 42 researchers who later went on to win the Noble Prize. Education: ACS publishes materials and promotes programs for the early detection and prevention of cancer for the community, our schools, physicians, and cancer patients. Advocacy: ACS fights for life-saving laws to increase federal research funding, reduce tobacco use, promote early detection of cancers, improve access to care and insurance coverage, and support cancer patients. Patient Services: ACS provides many patient and family support services to help people with cancer during and after treatment. Anyone, anywhere can access cancer information and support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at ACS.2345 or
