A Study of Sin 1 John 3:4-10

Definition of Sin – 1 John 3:4 Sin is Lawlessness. All have sinned. (Rom. 3:23) Sin separates us from God. (Isaiah 59:1-2) Sin is the product of giving in to our own lusts. (James 1:13-15)

Definition of Sin – 1 John 3:4 Sins are not inherited. (Ezek. 18:20) We are not born into sin. (Matt. 18:2-4)

Examples of Sin Adam and Eve in the Garden (Gen. 3:3-6, 14-19) King Saul (1 Sam. 15:16-24) King David (1 Chron. 21:1-3,7)

Results of Sin Spiritual Death (Rom. 6:23) Rejected by Christ (Matt. 7:21-23)

Jesus Came to Take Away Our Sins – 1 John 3:5 Through Christ we have an escape from death and a hope for eternal life (Rom. 5:17-21) God shows His love for us through Christ (Rom. 5:8-9, John 3:16) Christ lived a sinless life as an example to us (1 Pet. 2:21-24, Heb. 4:15)

Therefore, We Should Walk In Sin No More – 1 John 3:6-10 This does not mean that we cannot sin (once saved always saved), but that we cannot continue in sin and remain a child of God. (1 John 1:5-10, Rom. 6:1-2, Matt. 5:48) We need to deny ungodliness and worldly desires (Titus 2:11-15) We need to bridle our tongue (James 1:26)

Therefore, We Should Walk In Sin No More – 1 John 3:6-10 We need to abstain from every form of evil (1 Thess. 5:22, 4:3, 1 Pet. 2:11, 1 Cor. 6:9-11) We need to have a love for all but especially our brethren (1 John 3:11-19, 1 Pet. 4:8, Rom. 12:9-10, John 13:34-35, 1 Pet. 1:22, John 15:12-14, 14:15)

In Conclusion Sin is a transgression of God’s Commandments (1 John 3:4) Christ came to take away our sins. (1 John 3:5) Therefore we should no longer walk in sin, but should instead have a love for God, which means keeping His commandments. (1 John 3:6-10)

Have Your Sins Been Washed Away? Hear the Word of God (Romans 10:17) Believe in Christ (John 8:24) Confess Jesus as Lord and Christ (Romans 10:9) Repent of your sins (Acts 17:30) Be baptized for the remission of sins (1 Pet 3:21)
