Emergence of the Modern World Most historians believe the modern world began at the end of the Middle Ages and at the start of the Renaissance Mid 1300s to modern day

The Renaissance Began in Italy (mid 1300s – 1500s) Philosophical and artistic movement and expression Altered the way Europeans viewed themselves and the world Brought major changes in politics, culture, and the economy

3 Main Causes Humanism Trade Plague

Humanism Idea that you focus on your life (Humans) more then the Religious world. Adopted many classical Greek and Roman beliefs Sought fulfillment in daily life Believed all people had dignity and worth –Valued individual achievement and creativity

Trade Exposed Europeans to other cultures and ideas sparking curiosity Allowed for the exchange of new products, opened new markets, and increased wealth Brought on the plague

Black Plague Spread throughout Europe and killed 1/3 of the population Increased wealth amongst survivors and allowed for social mobility Encouraged living for the “here and now” Caused people to go against the Church
