What is Charity? How are people helped? Who can help? If you help are you in danger?

CHARITY- Social Service Provided by Individuals or private group actions Responds to immediate/short term needs Provides direct service (i.e. food, clothing, shelter, garbage pick up, visiting the sick) Directed at the “effects” of injustice Usually non-controversial and you will not be putting yourself in a position of danger. JUSTICE- Social Change Public- Collective actions Responds to long term needs Promotes social change (in-direct service) in institutions. Directed at the “root” causes of injustice Can involve controversy or protest (i.e. this can be challenging and at times, people put their lives on the line for justice) Justice

 Catholic social teaching calls us to serve those in need and to change the structures that deny people their dignity and rights as children of God.  Therefore, service and action, charity and justice are complementary components of what it means to follow Jesus Christ. Neither alone is sufficient; both are essential signs of the gospel at work. Charity and Justice are both important

 Social Justice are actions aimed at resolving the root causes of injustices.  Here, the key question is, Why? Why can some people afford to buy food, clothing, and shelter, while others cannot? Perhaps the cause is low-wage jobs or a rent system controlled by a handful of landlords.  In any case, social justice involves working for change that is focused on systems (the economic system, the health care system) and institutions (banks, schools, governments) rather than addressing the specific needs of individual families. The goal of social justice is to transform public policies to be more responsive to human needs over the long-term. The Wombat (All is One) What is Social Justice?

 Eucharist calls us to live as Jesus did, how does this apply to Justice? -Jesus worked towards making the world a better place by challenging authority and society to accept children, women, the poor and those that were physically and mentally challenged, as well as prostitutes  In what ways can you live out Eucharist, while contributing to Justice?  Fighting against all forms of discrimination.  Standing up for women’s education in developing countries  Defending the life and dignity of all people (young and old) Justice and Eucharist
