Design Report – Fall Semester

Title Page List name of project and team number List date List team members, advisor, sponsor Team logos

Table of Contents Have major sections and subsections listed Have each section and subsection numbered Provide page number

Abstract The abstract should be no more than one page in length. Focus on the highlights only. Bring the crux of the problem and its solution to the attention of the reader. 1.Briefly outline the problem. 2.State the overall function of the system to be designed. 3.Briefly describe the final design, including the major features. 4.Indicate the predicted performance and actual performance, if acquired.

Definitions Nomenclature: –List all symbols and terms and what they represent –Alphabetic order –English first, Greek next Glossary: –List all terms and acronyms and what they represent

Main Text Start sections on new page Figures –Label components in Figures that are discussed in text –Cite in text each figure and discuss each figure. –Put figures in text section if possible –Use figures from orals and add –Use more flow charts showing the device working flow, the analysis flow, the project plan, etc.

Main Text Text –Number pages of text –Skip line between paragraphs –Speak in the 3rd person –Use bullets / numbering to lead the reader –Highlight, boldface, italicize key points in the text –Eqn. (2) for citing, u+v=0 (2)

Main Text Units –Abbreviate in singular form without period –Add period only to avoid confusion: in vs. in. –System of units: SI or English: use customer form, be consistent Include schedule/Gantt and budgets in the back of the report. List key assumptions What are the risk areas?

Introduction 1.State the complete problem statement. 2.Present a more detailed background of the problem, origin and constraints. 3.Identify topics requiring investigation and analysis. 4.Brief overall view of what the report will include.

Preliminary Assessment of Design Describe all the alternative designs that were investigated. How do you evaluate and compare them? Why did you select the design that you did? Describe your final design.

Preliminary Assessment of Design The overall description of the final design. The technical feasibility of the implementation, including: –List of assumptions. –Technical calculations. –Data from programs, experiments, literature, etc. –Conclusions about the technical feasibility and efficiency. Practical feasibility of the implementation, including: –Estimate of time and cost aspects. –Manufacturing and assembly considerations –Practical operation and possible performance problems –Intuition such as “good” or “bad” feelings about the design

Detailed Analysis of Final Design Analyze the final design. Include all analytical work performed as part of the design process, simulation and predictions. This analysis should be clear, concise and complete. Use appendices to include background material and computer programs / output.

References Use ASME paper format If citing a web site, provide name and some detail as to source of site.

Appendices All the details that should be documented but doesn’t add direct value to the main body of the report.
