English Workshop Tuesday 20 th October 2015

Aims To know about the key areas of English To become familiar with the Key Stage One SAT’s Discussion about helping children with English Resources Questions

The 3 areas of English Speaking and Listening Reading Writing

Speaking and Listening Discuss the importance of speaking and listening with confidence Develops their spoken language Builds their vocabulary Improves their writing Improves their understanding of grammar

Reading Importance of reading every day Talking about books and asking questions Learning vocabulary Reading a wide range of books Parent story telling Library

Reading 2 papers: One with text and question combined One more challenging text with the questions in a separate booklet

Reading  Greater emphasis on comprehension elements of the new curriculum.  Each text includes a selection of unrelated texts of increasingly difficulty.  A mixture of 2 text types.  Paper 2 will be offered to all children.

Writing Writing- Grammar, punctuation and spelling Emphasis on technical aspects of grammar No English writing test

Reading Comprehension-SAT’s Explain the SAT’s paper Expectations- children to work independently Different types of questions

Phonics Phonics Test Daily phonics- letter sounds and blends Importance of using phonics in reading and writing
