slam The word unique describes something that is an original or is not a copy of something else. Walt Disney said it best when he stated, “The more you like yourself, the less you are like anyone else, which makes you unique.” In other words, it is important to like who you are and what you are. You are the only human like you. You will always be you and no one else. So when you decide to get used to you, you will begin to enjoy your unique qualities. Everyone has qualities; potentials, assets, capabilities, abilities, talents. Learn what yours are and SHINE! s l m a What does the word unique mean?

S Re-state your question as a statement. According to Oxford Dictionaries online, the word parochial means, “having a limited or narrow outlook or scope; narrow-minded, small-minded, provincial, small-town, conservative, intolerant, closed-minded.” What does the word _(parochial)_ mean?

L Locate evidence from the text to support your statement. Arthur Miller uses this word in his play during the introduction to Act I to describe the character of the community. He states, “The parochial snobbery of these people was partly responsible for their failure to convert Indians. Probably they also preferred to take land from heathens rather than from fellow Christians.”

a Analyze the evidence using your own words. In this text, the word parochial describes how strict in thinking and actions this community became. The word snobbery, in this quote, further shows that the community felt that they were right in their ways, more so than others.

m Make a meaningful connection. Parochial, in this text, meant that a person could not display individualistic thinking; everyone had to agree with the group in all ways. Their small-town community would not stand for individuals to think differently or uniquely.
