International Women’s Day... A. Celebrates women’s achievements B. Gives all women the day off work C. Encourages children to give their mother a gift Which one is correct?
International Women’s Day 8th March 2015 Why?
Why it is needed…. In 2015, in many countries around the world, women still lack the same basic, human rights as men. Do you know of any? International Women’s Day celebrates of 100 years of the women’s rights movement and highlights the issues facing women today.
Women’s rights around the world…. Did you know…. 1.In India (some parts): Road safety rules don’t apply to women 2.In Yemen: A woman is considered only half a witness 3.In Saudi Arabia and Vatican City: Women can’t vote... still 4.In Saudi Arabia and Morocco: Rape victims can be charged with crimes 5.In Yemen: Women can’t leave the house without their husbands’ permission 6.In Saudi Arabia: Women aren’t allowed to drive 7.Over 60 million girls worldwide are child brides, married before the age of 18 8.In Iran, women are banned from watching the World Cup
The movement for gender equality was originally conceived as a struggle led only by women, for women….. …..In recent years, men have begun to stand-up in addressing the inequalities and discrimination, faced by women and young girls.
♀♀♀♀♀ ♂♂ ♂♂♂ half the world’s population are women. ♀♀♀♂♂♂♂♂♂♂ a third of the world’s official work force are women. ♀♀♀♀♀♀♀♂♂♂ but they do two-thirds of the world’s work. ♀♂♂♂♂♂♂♂♂♂ However, they only receive one tenth of the world’s income. We still have a long way to go…
1 in 4 women will be the victim of domestic violence in their lifetime. Women working full time earn on average between 10-20% less than men on average. Only 22.5% of MPs are female and even less (17%) are in the cabinet. But it’s ok in the UK, right?
Girls outperform boys, nationally, at GCSEs and A levels. 2014’s results saw the biggest gap in the performance of girls vs. boys at GCSE
and yet, on average, women who go on to work full time, will receive between 30% and 40% less pay than men, for the same work
Why?
Women’s rights are EVERYONE’s rights In 2015, is it ok if: -Boys want to be hairdressers or fashion designers? -Boys want to cry and/or talk about their feelings? -Boys want to cover up spots with makeup? -Boys want to wear something pink? -Girls want to be football referees/lineswomen? -Girls want to fight on the front line for the Army? -Girls don’t want to wear makeup at all? -Girls want to wear trousers to school?
What does discrimination against women look like? Ever heard or said, the following? 1.“He runs like a girl” 2.“even my nan could have scored that” 3.“Don’t be such a big girl’s blouse” 4.“man-up!” 5.“that’s a man’s/girl’s sport” What impact do these comments have? Imagine if some of these words about women/girls, were replaced with words relating to the colour of someone’s skin, for example. We don’t tolerate racism, so why do we tolerate sexism?
Discrimination in the media….?? Why does Gemma get a slated more, for her weight, than Arg does?
Discrimination in the media….?? Why is more likely to publish more pictures of women posing and pouting, than men; who are always doing things and photographed doing their jobs?
Discrimination in the media….?? Why do women’s magazines seem to be “obsessed” with looks and yet “men’s” magazines get to be about cool things, like gadgets and tech?
Women + Sport
True equality….. isn’t about saying WOMEN are better than MEN. Women want equality for ALL! For: Women to be paid the same, treated the same, VALUED the same, as men. Not so difficult? What do YOU think equality would be like? Do you think we have gender equality in the UK?
Women are IMPORTANT. They are your mothers, sisters, cousins, friends, aunts, grandmothers……. ……….teachers! #equals
"The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist, nor to any one organization, but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights" Gloria Steinem
