CLASSIFICATION REVIEW 1

An organism that makes its own food; also known as an autotroph (a plant). PRODUCER

An organism that relies on other organisms for food; also known as a heterotroph. CONSUMER

An organism that feeds on the nutrients in dead organisms; fungi and microorganisms. DECOMPOSER

The chemical reactions taking place in organisms; how well an organism can burn the energy it consumes. METABOLISM

Another name for a producer or a plant; something that can make it’s own food. AUTOTROPH

Type of reproduction involving one parent that produces an offspring identical to that parent; budding, regeneration, binary fission. ASEXUAL

Type of reproduction involving two parents where the offspring is a combination of both parents. SEXUAL

An organism made up of many cells working together. MULTICELLULAR

Another name for a consumer or a decomposer; an organism that feeds off of other organisms in order to survive. HETEROTROPH

The building blocks of all life; all organisms begin life as this single living being. CELL

The theory that life can only come from life; living things only come from other living things. BIOGENESIS

The theory that life can come from non-living matter; was disproved by Francesco Redi. SPONTANEOUS GENERATION

The scientist who helped to disprove the theory of spontaneous generation with his experiment with meat and flies. FRANCESCO REDI

Something in the environment that causes an organism to respond or react; the cause before the effect. STIMULUS

A change in an organism’s behavior due to a stimulus; the effect after the cause. RESPONSE

The blue-print for life; each organism has its own instruction manual. DNA

A characteristic of all living things; organisms make more organisms of the same kind. REPRODUCTION

The passing on of traits from one generation to the next. HEREDITY

A single-celled, simple organism. UNICELLULAR

An organism’s ability to change with its environment; characteristic needed for survival. ADAPTATION

An organism's ability to maintain an internal balance or equilibrium. HOMEOSTASIS

Another name for any living thing. ORGANISM

The process use to obtain food through energy absorbed directly from the sun. PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Oxygen found in water used by organisms that breath underwater. DISSOLVED OXYGEN

Another name for a trait; makes an organism unique. CHARACTERISTICS

Define ALIVE... What are the characteristics of living things? CELLS DNA RESPOND REPRODUCE ENERGY GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT

What do organisms need in order to survive? FOOD WATER SHELTER AIR

What other item do plants need in order to survive? SUNLIGHT

How do plants use sunlight? PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Do you also know the difference between LIVING, NON-LIVING and DEAD? YOU BETTER!!!! BE ABLE TO GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF EACH AS WELL!!
