Session 4

Session Background The purpose of this session is to demonstrate the Bible does have answers and that all Christians are mandated to learn and practice apologetics.

Session 4 Topics  How could the first three days of creation be literal days if the sun was not created until day 4?  Who did Cain marry?  How could Adam name all the animals in one day?  How could Noah fit all the animals on the Ark?

The Bible and Apologetics 1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense [apologia] to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;

Purposes of Apologetics  To evangelize and have answers to challenges from non-believers  To glorify God  To obey God’s Word  To strengthen and encourage Christians  To bring down strongholds  To equip the next generation to maintain a biblical worldview

Challenge How could the first three days of creation be literal days if the sun was not created until day four? Day 1 Day 4

What Was This Light? Genesis 1:3-5 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.

Conclusion to Challenge  We do not need the sun for a day.  There are many forms of light.  God created light.  God is light.  We do not need the sun for a day.  There are many forms of light.  God created light.  God is light. The first three days of creation were literal 24-hour days.

Challenge Who did Cain marry? Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel Genesis 5:4 After he begot Seth, the days of Adam were eight hundred years; and he had sons and daughters.

Adam & Eve Genesis 1:31 “Very Good” MUTATIONS Increase with time Close intermarriage is normal Leviticus 18 Law against close intermarriage The Fall Curse

Challenge How Could Adam name all the animals in one day? Genesis 2:19 God brought the animals to Adam to see what he would call them Genesis 2:19 God brought the animals to Adam to see what he would call them Copyright © by Answers in Genesis

Horse kind Adam and the Animals Genesis chapter 1 states that the animals were created according to their kinds Chicken kind Dog kind

A Common Misconception about what the Bible Teaches  Adam was never told to name all the creatures.  Adam did not have to name the sea creatures, the beasts of the earth, or the insects.  Adam was never told to name all the creatures.  Adam did not have to name the sea creatures, the beasts of the earth, or the insects.

 There are about 2-million known species.  About 48% are invertebrate [not included].  The remaining 2% is about 40,000.  About 25,000 of these are marine creatures [not included].  About 4,000 of these are amphibian [not included].  Of the remaining 11,000 many would have descended from an original kind.

Conclusion to Challenge This would leave approximately 2,000 creatures for Adam to name. At 5 per minute, Adam could have done this in under six hours.

Challenge How Could Noah Fit All the Animals on the Ark?

Answering the Challenge 1. How did the animals get to the Ark? 2. How big was the Ark? 3. How many animals needed to be on the Ark? 1. How did the animals get to the Ark? 2. How big was the Ark? 3. How many animals needed to be on the Ark?

How did animals get to the Ark? Of the birds after their kind, of animals after their kind, and of every creeping thing of the earth after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive. Genesis 6:20

How big was the Ark?

Genesis 6:15 And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. 450 long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high

Noah’s Ark Size  1 ½ football fields long  Length to width ratio: 6 to 1  Not designed to go anywhere  Volume of 1.5 million cubic feet  100,000 square feet of floor space  Equivalent to 522 railroad cars  1 ½ football fields long  Length to width ratio: 6 to 1  Not designed to go anywhere  Volume of 1.5 million cubic feet  100,000 square feet of floor space  Equivalent to 522 railroad cars

How could Noah fit all the creatures on the Ark?  Not all living creatures had to go on the Ark.  Only the birds and land dwelling creatures with the breath of life went on the Ark.  Only two of each kind went on the Ark.  Not all living creatures had to go on the Ark.  Only the birds and land dwelling creatures with the breath of life went on the Ark.  Only two of each kind went on the Ark.

 Sea creatures and insects were not on the Ark.  We can assume a maximum of 50,000 creatures had to go on the Ark.  The average size animal on the Ark was about the size of a sheep.  Sea creatures and insects were not on the Ark.  We can assume a maximum of 50,000 creatures had to go on the Ark.  The average size animal on the Ark was about the size of a sheep. Only young creatures needed to be on the Ark

 The average double-deck stock railroad car can accommodate 240 sheep  A train pulling 210 cars could carry 50,400 sheep. 210 x 240 = 50,400

210 cars full 312 cars for Noah and family, food and luggage Conclusion Plenty of room for all the animals

Scoffers 2 Peter 3:3-6 3 knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, 4 and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation."

Scoffers 5 For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, 6 by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water.

Conclusion How could the first three days of creation be literal days if the sun was not created until day 4? Who did Cain marry? How could Adam name all the animals in one day? How could Noah fit all the animals on the Ark?
