P RESIDENT /V ICE P RESIDENT Ivana Marshall Southeast District 4-H Cabinet Ambassador Surry Unit January 19, 2013

W HAT D OES THE P RESIDENT D O ?  Roles and Duties:  Preside over meetings – (use confidence and have a strong workable knowledge of parliamentary procedure)  Keep order, be fair and neutral on issues  Ensure that all voices and opinions are heard  Cast deciding vote when there is a tie

T HE P RESIDENT ? CONTINUED  Stand and use the podium and or gavel with confidence but do not abuse such “power”  Avoid the use of “I” as a president – use phrases like, “the chair” or “your president”

T HE P RESIDENT ? CONTINUED  If you feel strongly about sharing your personal opinions on a subject, you must give the chair to the vice president and you cannot resume as president until the issue has been decided  When absent from a meeting, let the club leader and Vice President know in advance so they can arrange to fulfill your duties

V ICE P RESIDENTS – W HERE DO THEY FIT ?  Vice Presidents need to follow all of the rules previously stated about the President in case they have to preside in the absence of the President  Include other officers/members to help you plan the monthly programs  Make sure the President is aware of your programming ideas so he/she is not caught off guard
