House points Reward system in class Different houses named after different dragons Can be awarded a house point for many reasons! Counted each week across KS1 – winning house gets extra playtime!

Phonics We teach phonics three times a week At the end of year 1 the children will take part in a national phonics screening check. Their scores are recorded and sent home in school reports. If the children do not reach the pass mark, they will receive extra support in Y2 and retake the check.

Continuous Provision Different areas in all classrooms Planned activities that link with literacy, numeracy and topic focus Children are encouraged to take part in these independent activities Children are rewarded with a trophy for specific activities

Handwriting There is an emphasis on handwriting within Marlcliffe Primary School Children will be taught during literacy lessons They will be expected to join their handwriting by year 2 We teach a semi-cursive style

Handwriting Gives children a sense of achievement and pride in their work Improves self-esteem and motivation Plays a part in their personal development because care, pride, concentration and perseverance is what we are aiming for

How we teach handwriting We use line guides to help the children know where to begin each letter. This also helps them to size the letters correctly. Letters are taught systematically in family groups to begin with. We then teach the children how to begin joining the letters together using the joining stroke.

Assessing your child’s level The new curriculum has meant we have changed our assessment procedure. All children will be given a step (a number) that they are working at. This will be explained in more detail at your parents’ evening.

Working in Partnership What can you do to help with your child’s progression? Read AT LEAST five times a week. Practise spellings – read them, cover them and write them and then check they are spelt correctly. Talk through and do suggested activities on maths cards. Support with homework from the homework menu (choose one from the six options for this half term). Key word sheets.

Marlcliffe Uniform Policy No jeans or leggings. Dark trousers, skirts or long shorts (black/grey). Summer dresses in warm weather. Sweatshirts, jumpers, cardigans – with or without the Marlcliffe logo. Polo shirts, white or red. Safe and comfortable shoes or trainers, no heels. No jewellery.

Marlcliffe Uniform Policy PE kit White T shirt Navy or black shorts Trainers or plimsoles Long hair tied back Jewellery is not allowed! You can wear watches and very small stud earrings to school but not for PE – take them out at home in the morning.

Thank you! Please feel free to come and discuss things about your child with your individual teacher. Catch us after school for a chat.
