Life of Anne Frank By Freddie Mulligan

Anne Frank Anne frank was born on 12 June 1929 in Germany. Her Nationality was German until 1941 and then Stateless from 1941. In 1941 she became stateless that means that she was not part of a country, she had no nationality when she was hiding. Before then she was German and lived in Frankfurt with her family till 1941 then she went into hiding with her family and another family that was also German.

Brief history The Frank family moved from Germany to Amsterdam in 1933, the year the Nazis gained controlled over Germany. By the beginning of 1940, they were trapped in Amsterdam by the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. As persecutions of the Jewish population increased in July 1942, the family went into hiding in the hidden rooms of Anne's father. As well as Anne Frank’s family there were four other Jews in the Secret Annex besides the Frank family Hermann and Auguste van Pels with their sons Peter, and Fritz Pfeffer.

Anne Frank’s Family and others The Frank Family was: Otto Frank was the father Edith was the mother Margot was Anne sister Anne was the daughter who wrote the diary. There was another family and the two more people who came later were called: The Van Daans and Albert

In the Annex The two families ate lots of dried beans and the same food everyday. Anne often complained about the diet of the same thing day after day. The Annex was a small place behind a bookshelf that contained two families at the start and later on another person came to join them. They would have to sneak out and find food normally dried beans or canned foods and bring them up for the family to eat. The families that were hiding the Franks and the The Van Daans were being helped by people that weren't Jewish and had nothing to fear when the Nazis came past. There was a close call one time because the Van Daan had gone to get food and brought back dried beans and on the way up, they had split the whole bag and dropped the beans. Luckily there was no one down stairs except for the people helping them.

The Arrest On 4 August 1944, everyone in the Secret Annex was arrested. Someone had betrayed them. They were deported first to the Westerbork transit camp, and then on to Auschwitz. Otto Frank is the only person from the Secret Annex to survive the camps. The others all died. Hermann van Pels was murdered in the gas chambers, and Auguste was thrown in front of a train during a transport. The others die of disease and exhaustion

The concentration camp Anne and her family were taken to a concentration camp. While they were there, Anne saw her friend called Lies. it was one of her friends from school at the camp. Lies family was caught trying to escape out of the country. The Franks had thought about doing the same thing before they left for hiding, but they had decided it was too risky. Anne and Lies saw each other in the camp. They were able to talk for a few minuets, but no longer.

The Franks Sicknesses Anne's sister, Margot got sick with typhus. The Frank family was worried because she was very ill. Not longer afterwards, Margot died. Anne later became sick with typhus also. Prisoners in the camp were not allowed to have medicine. typhus is usually seen in areas where hygiene is poor and the temperature is cold. Endemic typhus is sometimes called "jail fever.” and this is the sickness that the Frank daughter’s had.

The deaths The mother of Anne Frank (Edith) died of starvation in Auschwitz. Later on Margot got sick with typhus and later on died. Later on Anne got sick with typhus as well, that sickness was commonly know to go around the camps and that is why another name for it is, “jail fever”. Otto, Anne frank’s father was the only one who survived and got out to live a normal life and went back to Auschwitz and decided to publish Anne Frank’s diary.

The Diary Even though Anne Frank died her diary did not and her father found out that she was writing a diary and he finally published it and it became very famous and now if you ask about Anne frank people will know. The place where the families lived is now available to have a look at and it is a tourist attraction. So now the Diary of Anne Frank is a big part of history and it shows how the Nazis were and how bad it was to be a Jew in that time.
