The Cult of Stalin

Totalitarian Leader A totalitarian leader personally asserts their control over all the individuals of their country This had been Stalin’s aim all along, and he had finally achieved it. This made him increasingly paranoid about opposition. He made it increasingly difficult for anyone to challenge his power, and made sure no one else made any decisions

Stalin’s personal life Very few Russians knew anything about Stalin’s personal life. His children were neglected of attention from their father, and his second wife had committed suicide in 1932 Stalin’s private life seemed mysterious: this led to the development of a leadership cult. Russians came to believe that Stalin had super human qualities

The truth about Stalin Joseph was very self conscious about his height (he was 1.62 metres tall!!!!) To seem more formidable, he would wear heels!!!! He was also very careful about how he was photographed, making sure he didn’t look short!

Propaganda Propaganda was used early on to promote the ideology of the Communist party By the 1930s though, it was primarily used to build Stalin into a God-like figure Dictator-size portraits were displayed everywhere

What is Propaganda? It is something that is produced to sway the beliefs of the viewer It is usually related to a particular belief or ideology The information may be greatly exaggerated or entirely false Stalin used it to portray himself as a man of strength & vision, who empathised with the working people, and showed an angry contempt for any enemies

Analysing Propaganda: When looking at the propaganda, identify the key features 1.What is the dominant image? 2.What colours are used? 3.What message is it portraying? What is the purpose? 4.Do you think the image would have been effective? Why / Why not:
