Presentation transcript:

eTeens Lesson 2: Negotiation & Impulse Control Secondary 3 16 April 2014

Learning objectives Students practise negotiating their way out of a negative situation by applying skills of decision making and assertive style of communication. Students learn Risk Reduction and Situation Awareness to aid Control of Impulse in Sexual behaviour.

Video: How far should I go? 1.Play the video. 2.Pause at 1.48” to facilitate discussion on what Mary should do. 3.Review the refusal lines from Lesson 1. 4.At end of video, discuss Mary’s reaction – how she stopped Joe from getting too physical.

Ways of saying NO Once is all it takes to get pregnant. May be we are not ready for sex. I really don’t want sex before marriage. If you love me, you wouldn’t force me to do something I don’t want to. May be we can just hug. I know that not everyone is having sex. For example, I’m not. I don’t feel good when pressured, so I’m leaving. I trust me and me does not want to have sex.

Impulse Control When we are impulsive or do things on the spur of the moment, we often do not STOP to THINK of the consequences of our actions. When we STOP to THINK of the consequences of our actions, we will be able to make better decisions with less harmful or negative consequences. Situations that can give rise to difficulty in controlling impulses are.

Should Mary leave or stay? The petting line – where to draw the line before things happen that can make it difficult for clear decisions to be made.

Summary Impulse control – STOP & THINK Red Flag situations – compromising situations Respect boundaries ▫ We need to work out boundaries and guidelines beforehand, so that when we encounter the situation, the warning lights will come on when we are faced with overstepping the boundaries. This will help us to stay within our control and not overstep boundaries.
