Presentation transcript:

Being true to yourself and others. Honesty & Integrity Being true to yourself and others.

Honesty Defined truthfulness, sincerity, or frankness freedom from deceit or fraud Be true to others in all that you do.

Integrity Defined adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character acting in an honorable manner regardless of the circumstances or who is watching Be true to yourself in all that you do.

Honesty & Integrity “I am not bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live by the light that I have. I must stand with anyone who stands right, stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong.” — Abraham Lincoln

Why are honesty and integrity important? If you cannot be honest with people, you cannot develop long-term meaningful relationships with them, because there is no trust. If you are not honest with yourself … if you violate your own values, you will have difficulty trusting yourself. You will eventually become overwhelmed with doubt, and with good reason. If you do not have principles, or have them but do not hold to them, you will have difficulty knowing how you will act when tough choices arise in life.

Why are honesty and integrity important? If you think that taking a shortcut, and sacrificing your integrity, will somehow get you more money and success or more fun and pleasure, think again… You’re thinking short term… In the long term, violating trust with others or with yourself is the surest way to failure.

Why are honesty and integrity important? Short-term results can be deceiving think about the life you want to create … the person you want to become.

Developing a Personal Integrity Plan for Life Think of a person you admire. Why do you admire them? List 6 character traits that you find valuable…

Developing a Personal Integrity Plan for Life Using these six traits, create a statement that incorporates what you truly believe and value…

Example: I believe in truth and fairness. In my actions, I will not do anything that will jeopardize my integrity or the integrity of my friends. I will never compromise truth and fairness for personal or professional gain.

Use these to get started. I believe______________________________________. In my actions, I will/will not ____________________. I will never____________________________________. I will always___________________________________.

Share your statements. Turn them in before leaving class. We will use them again next week.
