So, in July 1772 the two ships sailed from Plymouth and four weeks later, they reached the Cape Verde Islands off the African coast. James called the new piece of equipment his ‘Watch Machine’ and it guided them back to England where James was met with a hero’s welcome. It was July To celebrate and remember his voyage, 2000 medals were made and sold as souvenirs. They were called the Resolution and Adventure Medals.
