HOMOSEXUALS WELCOMED? SDA Church opposes homosexual practice and relationships. SDA Church does NOT oppose homosexuals. Homosexuals are welcomed as members in the Church so long as they do not practice or promote a homosexual lifestyle. SDA Church only recognizes monogamous marriages between a man and a woman.

WHAT IS THE LAW? More than 2/3 of the US population is located in jurisdictions that bar discrimination on the basis of gender identity or expression. All federal employees are protected from discrimination based on gender identity or expression. Gender identity issues are not the same as sexual orientation (e.g. homosexuality). Do not approach them that way. Surgery is not considered mandatory to gender identity.

SOME PRACTICAL CHALLENGES? Use of restrooms is one of the biggest practical issues that arise in gender identity transition. How do you deal with the issue of privacy versus informing people? How do you deal with the issue of marriage of the person and their children? How do you deal with the issue of ordination of a male pastor or transitions to female? What happens if the transition takes place during employment for your organization?

Are there degrees of sexual abuse? Does a 19-year-old male (18 being adult) who has consensual sexual relations with his 17-year-old girlfriend and convicted of statutory rape have to be treated the same as a pedophile? Does a person charged with one incident of molestation with a 13-year-old girl by touching her inappropriately at his home differ from the predator who has molested six children and done so during his time volunteering at the church school?
