© 2003 Wyeth. 03 January 2016 Issues in Implementing a Global Driver Safety Culture Andy Stubbings, Wyeth Regional Director, E,H&S EMEA

Wyeth  Global Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Company  Represented in all Regions of the World  11,000 vehicles in Global Fleet  Corporate Safe Driving Committee and Regional Safe Driving Committees in the US, EMEA and Latin America

Original Plan for a Global Driver Safety Programme  All affiliate companies would be instructed to implement the programme  An identical programme worldwide  In English  To be launched worldwide in 6 months  Data collection would start immediately It was so simple, what could possibly go wrong?

Issue 1 – the Affiliates – Where and Who?  The responsible Department was Environment, Health and Safety  Very limited previous contacts with Affiliate Sales Forces  Upto 4 separate affiliates in each country and 50+ countries worldwide!  Needed to make contact and fast!  Not always the Fleet Manager – HR – Admin – Finance – Sales – all with full time jobs  Get basic data – numbers and locations of drivers and cars

Issue 2 – the Champions!  Needed to have Senior Management Champions with high standing and a wide remit to lead the Programme  Work through them to identify local country contacts  Sponsor of the Programme worked with Champions to appoint all Country / General Managers as local Champions  Country / General Managers appointed the Implementation Team Leaders

Issue 3 – An Adaptable Programme  Driving cultures differ between countries and even more between regions  Road signs, roads, driving terminology, vehicles, legislation, insurance etc all vary from country to country  Affiliate car policies vary from country to country  Accident and collision definitions vary from country to country

Issue 4 – An Adaptable Programme  How many truly Global Programmes are there?  Need a Programme that is adaptable and flexible, with good support and good recommendations from other users  Need to select it very carefully  Need to work with the supplier to understand the issues and make the adaptations necessary – whilst still maintaining consistency and standards

Issue 5 – An Adaptable Programme  Multi language capability is absolutely essential  To gain high user acceptance and to allow high level of understanding  Accurate translations  Translations with the correct meaning  Translations with the correct terminology  To allow a choice for expats and staff transfers  Need a Global Programme that appears to be Local – remember we want it to be a “culture” – not just a Corporate Programme

Issue 6 – An Adaptable Programme  Need to ensure the Programme meets local legal requirements  Acceptance by Works Councils / Unions  Complies with local Privacy Laws  Privacy Statements  Use of Legal Counsel experienced in Privacy Issues  Check carefully what information / data you really need to run the Programme

Issue 7 - Timing  However long you think it will take – it will take twice as long  Language differences  Time zone differences  Staff with full time “real” jobs  Differing local priorities  Allow sufficient time – be flexible

Comments  None of the issues is unique to Driver Safety  None of the issues is insurmountable All of the people involved Worldwide really want help with Driver Safety!
