SOCIALIZATION AN INTERACTIVE PROCESS THROUGH WHICH INDIVIDUALS LEARN THE BASIC SKILLS, VALUES, BELIEFS, AND BEHAVIORAL PATTERNS OF SOCIETY

Agents of Socialization  Specific individuals, groups and institutions that provide situations in which socialization can occur  Re-socialization  A break with past experiences and learning of new values and norms Forcibly changing an individual’s personality and social behavior

The MAIN Agents of Socialization in Amurrrica….  The Family  The Peer Group  The School  The Mass Media  Other Agents…

The FAMILY  MOST Important  We learn much of our early values, norms, etc. from our families

The PEER GROUP  Influential mostly in adolescence and beyond…  We are concerned with being accepted by our peers and will act similarly to “fit in”

The SCHOOL  Occupies a large part of our day (for years!)  Schools have specific classes that teach those things which are society values:  Reading, writing, math, science, civics, health, etc.  Why is there no basket-weaving course?!  Schools transmit cultural values like patriotism, ethics, responsibility, citizenship, leadership…  Others??

The MASS MEDIA NO  Newspapers, magazines, books, TV, radio, films, and other forms of media with NO personal contact between individuals sending and receiving information  DYK  DYK… 98% of American homes have a TV turned on for 7 hrs. a day?!

Other Agents of Socialization…  Religion  Values  65% of US practices  Work  Little League  4-H  Etc.

Total Institution  People are isolated from society for a set period of time and subject to the control of officials  Ex. Prisons, boot camps, monasteries  Purpose often is to re-socialize individuals
