Adaptive Computing: Key Mission 2009 Doc. Patrik Floréen

Contents The NOW (=2005): Who, What, and With Whom? Interesting research topics The THEN (=2009): Who, What and With Whom? Possible achievements by 2009 Problems and forthcoming actions

NOW: Who? Group of Doc. Patrik Floréen: –Senior researcher: PhD Greger Lindén –Researchers: Jukka Kohonen, Petteri Nurmi, Michael Przybilski, Jukka Suomela –Programmer: Fredrik Boström Group of Prof. Hannu Toivonen: –Researchers: Kari Laasonen, Mika Raento –Programmer: Renaud Petit

NOW: What? Topology control and routing in ad hoc and sensor networks (NAPS) Context management for mobile or embedded applications (MobiLife and Space4U) Presence services (Context)

NOW: What? Mobile computing Modelling and data analysis Combinatorial optimization Context- awareness Ad hoc networking

NOW: With whom? Draws on existing competence in data mining (incl. probabilistic reasoning), combinatorial optimization and language technology At the intersection of many HIIT research groups –Many groups deal with data communication, context-awareness, personalisation and adaptation; in ARU CoSCo and Fuego (incl. user experience) National collaboration with Nokia and other ICT companies European collaboration with the MobiLife consortium, mostly with Telematica Instituut, NEC, FOKUS, DoCoMo Eurolabs

Interesting Research Topics Common theme: Restricted resources & Distribution –How to make inference on context data with limited resources? (Data analysis and machine learning) –How to construct distributed context-aware software architectures (Software engineering) –How to distributedly operate ad hoc networks to achieve the desired tasks? (Algorithmics) What we do NOT do: –Data communication protocols –Data analysis requiring massive computational resources

THEN: Who? Joint effort with data analysis, intelligent systems and mobile computing groups –Evolution and redistribution between groups Joint research programme(s) à la HIIT strategy New senior / experienced researchers –Especially postdocs

THEN: What? Mobile computing Modelling and data analysis Combinatorial optimization

THEN: With whom? More collaboration within Finland (TKK, VTT Oulu, …) Internationally: also non-European collaboration (USA, …)

Possible achievements by 2009 New approaches to context inference tasks General-purpose context-aware architecture Practical ad hoc networking solutions About 5 PhD theses completed

Problems and forthcoming actions Context-aware computing does not exist as a methodology What is our core competence? –Usually the competence is method oriented, not application oriented We have an Adaptive Computing strategy day on Friday 3 June at Uunisaari Further discussions needed before we have a steady course set out!
