Presentation transcript:

Learn when the reading skills of skimming and scanning are appropriate. Understand the difference between skimming, scanning, and reading precisely. Practice skimming and scanning. Read sections of The 2013 Oregon State of the Agriculture Industry Report.

A literary text, and An informational text

Flexible readers modify their reading rates and their choice of strategies to fit different kinds of texts for different purposes.

 Skimming  Scanning  Precise Reading

 You want to get an overall idea about the contents of the article.  Practice reading quickly to get a main idea.  Focus on title, headings and subheadings as you slowly turn the pages.  Think about the focus of the article as you skim over highlighted text, charts, images and captions.  Read the first and last lines of paragraphs; focus on introduction and conclusion of the text.

Mark each statement as true or false. Be prepared to defend your decision.  Farm income (gross and net) is the key measure of farm success and viability.  Oregon’s farmland covers over 16 million acres.  A land use system cannot protect farmland for farm use and minimizes conflicting uses

Precisely read the report. Be prepared to discuss the report in the next class.

Explain the difference between skimming and scanning
