Delivered by: Matthew Zito, Chief Scientist 156 5th Avenue Penthouse New York, NY P: The Database Diet

Today’s Agenda The Growing Database Waistline High Blood Pressure for DBAs The Low-Cal Database Environment Healthy Alternatives Build Better Management Muscles Conclusion

The Growing Database Waistline Servers are incredibly under utilized –UNIX servers averaging 20-25% utilization –Windows/Linux servers average <15% utilization Databases are getting bigger all the time –Relational databases are averaging 100% data growth annually –50% more databases every year Databases are getting more complicated –New types of data - XML, unstructured content –Clustering, data federation, etc. –Average large enterprise runs 4 different database products

High Blood Pressure for DBAs Tedious DBA Work –Provisioning, Patching –Auditing –Root Cause Analysis “Bad” DBA work is ~75% of a DBA’s time More stringent compliance and security requirements –Working with auditors and compliance teams –Fears of data loss make security critical Shorter timeframes, longer work days, bigger golden parachutes for executives

Case Study: DST Changes The Mini-Y2K Due to the Energy Policy Act of 2005, DST is starting earlier this year Patches –Windows patches for SQL Server –Oracle may require multiple patches –This is in addition to JRE patches, OS patches, etc. Required process: –Evaluate each database server, versions, patch levels, etc. –Create a “scorecard” for each server –Identify required changes that are needed –Deploy patches –QA applications Complex, time-sensitive, lots of work, and stressful

The Low-Cal Database Environment The Low-Cal Database Environment is: –Simpler –More efficient –Easier to manage –Healthier for everyone involved Simpler –Fewer deployed configurations –Fewer versions of databases –Real-time tracking of changes

The Low-Cal Database Environment More Efficient –Get higher utilization of servers –Spend less time doing root-cause analysis –Make DBA teams more productive Easier to Manage –Easier to understand how databases are configured –Clearly defined processes –Enforce standards and best practices

Healthy Alternatives Standard Configurations –Build a library of “approved” configurations, including file paths, patches, versions –Automate their deployment - script, software, etc. –Document standards Real-Time Inventory & Config Mgmt. –Accurately track patch levels, configuration parameters, data files, changes, etc. –Allows teams to immediately identify non- compliant systems, missing patches, etc. –Track deployments and migrations in progress

Build Better Management Muscles Automated Patching –One person documents, tests, and scripts patch deployment –Other DBAs deploy –DBA teams get to focus on QA, scheduling downtime, etc. Defect Remediation –Leverage real-time configuration management –Identify defects periodically (incorrect init.ora parameters, etc.) –Fix the issues –Continue tracking changes ongoing

Long Term Benefits More effectively take advantage of virtualization, RAC, Oracle Grids –Better multi-instance management –Scale the number of instances without scaling the management difficulty More secure, stable database infrastructure –Up to date on patches –Tracking user changes to databases –Easier compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, etc.

Summary Databases have become less efficient –More data and databases –More rules and regulations –More servers and complex technologies Centralized management is key to a slimmer database environment –Better insight into activities –Automation eases administrative overhead –Standardization ties it all together

GridApp’s Healthy Solution: Clarity Enterprise GridApp Clarity™ –The only solution to deliver full visibility and control of the heterogeneous database environment –Provides an inventory of All databases and patch levels Configuration parameters and changes Clustering configuration –Enables reconciliation between change control and user action –Supports major databases - Oracle, SQL Server, Sybase –Cross operating system Solaris Linux Windows soon HP-UX and AIX

GridApp’s Healthy Solution: Clarity Enterprise (cont.) Automates error-prone, time-consuming, and manual tasks which: –assures accuracy and completeness –dramatically shortens time to do admin tasks –can improve time-to-market for new applications Audits at the user and action level –Consolidates all audit activity across databases –Isolates exception DBA activity and quickly reacts –Tracks actions in a non-repudiated format Clarity helps organizations view, measure, and gain control of their increasingly complex DB infrastructures.

Clarity “Closed Loop” Solution Guarantee Compliance 4 Automated Enterprise Database Operations Define Standards 2 Automated Patching, Provisioning, & Operations 3 Discover & Inventory - Centralize & Baseline 1
