Notes # 10 “Forms of Government” Monarchy

What is it? On a separate sheet of paper, by yourself, write down what you think a Monarchy is? What makes a government a Monarchy?

Absolute Monarchy This occurs when the government and country are completely controlled by the Monarch, the King or Queen. The Sovereign (Monarch) wields unlimited power, and though may have a council of advisers, like other nobles and religious leaders, their word is law. Examples: United Kingdom before the Magna Carta and the establishment of Parliament. A modern example is Saudi Arabia.

Constitutional Monarchy A Monarchy were the Monarch’s power is limited by a Constitution. Also called a Limited Monarchy or a Parliamentary Monarchy. In this form of government, the Monarch power is checked by another branch of government, and the Monarch does not have total power. Examples: United Kingdom, for they have a parliament.

Constitutional Monarchy There are two types of Constitutional Monarchies. An Executive Monarchy is where the Monarch still makes day to day decisions. Example: Kuwait A Ceremonial Monarchy is used only on special occasions. Example: United Kingdom

How do they take power? On a piece of paper, how do Monarchs take power?

Taking Power Most Monarchies choose their next ruler through birth, usually the first son, or daughter of the Monarch they are replacing. In some cases the person who is next in line to the throne may abdicate, or refuse the office, in which case many different family members may take the office, sometime leading too war. However, many monarchs can be families that take over a country. Some Monarchs are elected, almost like a President, or even choosen by their country members to lead.

You again!!! On that separate sheet of paper, describe the different Monarchies, including the different types of Constitutional Monarchies.
