Bell Ringer: November 4 To prepare for today’s lesson, you will need to take out 2 pieces of paper and a writing utensil. Next, find a partner and discuss (1) what the word prejudice means and (2) how prejudice has shown its face both in the past, in movies/books, and present day. Rough Draft Prompt: Discuss prejudice as a problem in society from what you’ve learned from history, texts, and the world around you today. “You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view…until you climb into his skin and walk in it.” – Atticus Finch, To Kill a Mockingbird

Today’s Goal: Using the writing prompt, you will create a rough draft based solely off what you know about prejudice. You will use examples from what you have learned about the past and what you have seen currently in the news, whether it be world or local, as well as what you have witnessed or experienced yourself. Since this is a rough draft, you will have time this quarter to gather more information, as well as learn new writing skills to make this a better essay. Today is solely to create a draft so you at least have a text to work with in the future.

Introduction drafting (12 minutes) Prompt Reminder: Discuss prejudice as a problem in society from what you’ve learned from history, texts, and the world around you today. Current Writing Focus: During this 12 minute time period, create a rough draft of an introduction. Remember what you have learned thus far about the parts of an introduction: hook, background, and thesis.

Break Time: Please take 4 minutes to stretch/ share/talk. Since you cannot stop during the 12 minute sessions, this is your time to take the break you need.

Body paragraph #1: Past (12 minutes) Current Writing Focus: During this 12 minute time period, create a body paragraph that explains what you have been taught about prejudice in history (think race, gender, religion, etc.) Prompt Reminder: from history Discuss prejudice as a problem in society from what you’ve learned from history, texts, and the world around you today.

Break Time: Please take 4 minutes to stretch/ share/talk. Since you cannot stop during the 12 minute sessions, this is your time to take the break you need.

Body paragraph #2 drafting (12 minutes) Prompt Reminder: texts Discuss prejudice as a problem in society from what you’ve learned from history, texts, and the world around you today. Current Writing Focus: During this 12 minute time period, create a body paragraph that explains what you have read in a book, watched in a movie or on a TV show, or heard in songs about prejudice.

Body paragraph #3 drafting (12 minutes) Prompt Reminder: the world around you today Discuss prejudice as a problem in society from what you’ve learned from history, texts, and the world around you today. Current Writing Focus: During this 12 minute time period, create a body paragraph that explains what is happening currently when it comes to prejudice. What do you see happening?

Conclusion drafting (12 minutes) Prompt Reminder: Discuss prejudice as a problem in society from what you’ve learned from history, texts, and the world around you today. Current Writing Focus: During this 12 minute time period, create a rough draft of a conclusion. Remember what you have learned thus far about the parts of a conclusion: restated thesis, summary, ending thought.
