Common Advertising Strategies Yes I want it! Yes I need it

Advertising is a powerful tool. People use advertising to make people want to buy their products We are going to look at the different ways advertising companies try to influence our decision to buy their product

Three factors include Presentation (how the commercial looks and sounds) Catchy Slogans (Jingles, catch phrases that make us think of that product. Eg The AAMI commercial ‘What About Me’ song Target audience (Who do you want to buy the product)

Lets look at some of the strategies used- Ideal / Perfect People: Advertisers use models. If we see beautiful people using the products, we may buy the product because we think we will be beautiful if we use the product

Will I look like this if I buy Bonds? See Nutrigrain Ad- Youtube

Heart Strings Commercials often play on peoples emotions. If you see an ad that makes you feel good, or you think is cute you may buy the product. Eg – Father and daughter eating out together at McDonalds -A cute puppy rolling toilet paper -Cute Polar Bear Family (see Youtube)

Humour Making people laugh could help sell a product. See Barbara from the Bank on Wiki

Sound Effects Music and stereophonic sounds often play a key role in setting the mood and making a commercial more attractive

Making the Product Look Better than it is Many toy commercials show their toys in life-like fashion, doing incredible things. Airplanes do loop-the-loops and cars do wheelies, dolls cry and spring-loaded missiles hit gorillas dead in the chest. This would be fine if the toys really did these things See Youtube (Hulkhands)

Star Quality Advertising companies use stars/celebrities to sell their products Eg Micheal Jackson (see Wiki)

Fun/Excitement If a commercial shows people having fun people will want to buy the product. See Coke Commercial on wikispace.

Catchy Slogans Advertising companies use catchy slogans to draw people to their product A slogan is a memorable motto or phrase used in a commercial as a repetitive expression of an idea or purpose.mottophrase Lets look at some For example "Just like a chocolate milkshake, only crunchy" - Coco Pops breakfast cereal

“Snap Crackle and Pop”- Rice Bubbles “I’m lovin’ it”- McDonalds “The burgers are better at Hungry Jacks”- Hungry Jacks. (See Wiki). "Maybe she's born with it, maybe it's Maybelline" – Maybelline

Target Audience A specific audience that the advertising message is designed. Example- the Hulk hand commercial would probably be aimed at boys 8-11

Task In groups, choose a commercial from the Wikispace page oose+a+commercial oose+a+commercial Name the advertising strategies used to create the commercial. Explain to the class
