Small initiative for Improvement of Environment By Shrikant Kate

Great Words: Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. Nelson Mandela I believe that education is the fundamental method of social progress and reform. John Dewey Education is the transmission of civilization. Ariel and Will Durant Remember that our nation's first great leaders were also our first great scholars. John F. Kennedy

Education: it’s importance Education is most important as it enables a child to realize his or her full potential; to think, question and judge independently; develop sense of self- respect, dignity and self-confidence; learn to love and respect fellow human beings and nature; in decision making; develop civic sense, citizenship and values of participatory democracy.

Low Education Level in India : Major Reasons : Poverty There are several reasons for the low levels of literacy in India, not the least of which is the high level of poverty Over one-third of the population is estimated to be living below the poverty line (The World Bank, 1997a). Although school attendance is free, the costs of books, uniforms, and transportation to school can be too much for poor families

Facts of education in India A major educational problem facing both boys and girls in India is that although they may be enrolled at the beginning of the year they don’t always remain in school.

Reason for discontinuing education It is estimated that 45 percent of girls and 41 percent of boys drop out of school between grades 1 and 5 (The World Bank, 1997b). Reason: Un availability of resources for continuing basic education

Few Facts: 40% of India's population is below the age of 18 years which at 400 million is the world's largest child population. Less than half of India's children between the age 6 and 14 go to school. A little over one-third of all children who enroll in grade one reach grade eight. 50% of Indian children aged 6-18 do not go to school

Few Facts: In India, only 53% of habitation has a primary school and 20% has a secondary school. Dropout rates increase alarmingly in class III to V, its 50% for boys, 58% for girls More than 50 per cent of girls fail to enroll in school; those that do are likely to drop out by the age of % of Indian children aged 6-18 do not go to school Source: 7th All India Education Survey, 2002

How paper is prepared Paper is made by “PULP” of trees and for getting pulp millions of trees cut every year which results deforestation Deforestation results global warming, increasing pollution, reducing wild animals

No. of Trees cuts for making paper 1 ton of uncoated virgin (non-recycled) printing and office paper uses 24 trees 1 ton of 100% virgin (non-recycled) newsprint uses 12 trees A pallet of copier paper (20-lb. sheet weight, or 20#) contains 40 cartons and weighs 1 ton. Therefore: 1 carton (10 reams) of 100% virgin copier paper uses 0.6 trees 1 tree makes reams of copy paper or 8,333.3 sheets

No. of Trees cut for making paper 1 ream (500 sheets) uses 6% of a tree (and those add up quickly!) 1 ton of coated, higher-end virgin magazine paper (used for magazines like National Geographic and many others) uses a little more than 15 trees (15.36) 1 ton of coated, lower-end virgin magazine paper (used for newsmagazines and most catalogs uses nearly 8 trees (7.68)

Trees required for a district For one tone paper 12.5 trees Average 1000 students are in one school Average wt of books in each bag of student 3 Kg Total Wt of paper in a school 3000 Kg ( 3 ton) Total No of tree for each school 12.5 X 3 =38 nos Assuming 1000 school in a district, Total no of tree required in district nos

Forest required for a district Assuming one hectare of land have 500 trees For trees total land 38000/500 Total forest to be cut in each district 76 hectare 76 hectare land will be deforest for one district every year

Benefits If 50 % of old books are reused then ?  Minimize deforestation and increase in forestland which resulting, reduction in global warming.  Increase in forest land will wild life as well as endanger species tiger etc  Production of printing ink will reduce which result in minimizing the chemical pollution, save power, which required for production of printing ink, also minimize the pollution due to printing ink factory.  Will save water required for production of printing ink. 

Benefits  As we know today education has become professional and school management recommends costly new books only for getting 30 to 50% commission from publishers which is paid by parents, some times students who are unable to purchase costly books they left education and some goes in criminal activities. Reuse of books will avoid such circumstances.  By saving forest, emission of green house gasses can be reduce, this will help to get carbon credit resulting in financial support from international organization.

Proposed Schemes How we can implement :- 1. Scheme No 1:- donating old books in the school by pass out students, these books will be distributed to poor students free of cost which strengthen the act of Right to Education. 2. Form book bank and collect old books from pass out students, one person should be appointed, who will keep record of books and distributed to poor students.

Proposed Schemes Scheme No 2:- Remaining books will be distributed to students at conational rate. From the income of sale of books management will arrange furniture and record keeping as well as maintenance of books, salary of person appointed for this job. Binding of book will give opportunity to book binders

Our duty towards Society Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it. Marian Wright Edelman Are we educated ? Education: a debt due from present to future generations. George Peabody Are we working towards it ?

Our selfless objective: Addressing individual needs of children belonging to most disadvantaged backgrounds by providing Books and other resources thereby realizing the dream of achieving Education For All. Encourage reuse of old books and save forest, environment, wild animals and future of our children.

A Noble Initiative : Donate Books How can you be a part of this?
