RELIGION The culture of the northwest coast believed that their passed history was passed down threw songs and dances. The religious leader Was a Indian of the northwest coast in North America The ceremonies A potlatch was a big celebration that often took more than a year to plan. The ceremony usually corresponded with a person's change in social status, for example, marriage, birth, death, and coming of age. It included a feast, singing and costumed dancers, and some potlatches lasted as long as two to three weeks. Most importantly, though, potlatches became a way in which families could show off their wealth to others

Social organization and government In Northwest Coast culture, there were specific roles for both the men and women. •Men were responsible for all the hunting and fishing. •Men also did all the building (longhouses) and carving (canoes, totem poles). •Women stayed near the home, doing work on land. •The women were responsible for all of the chores related to keeping the home: they cleaned, cooked, and looked after the children •The Northwest Coast people never developed a democracy. Instead, their society was ruled by wealth. The wealthiest clan had the most power. •Their society included different classes: nobles, commoners, and slaves (acquired through War or purchase).

Kinship Groups in the northwest coast tended to be matrilineal passing status, property, and education through the maternal line those in the other three provinces were generally patrilineal. Marriages were usually arranged by parents, who openly wish to see their children rise in status. As with up marrying slaves, members of the middle classes of a group could marry up if they had distinguished them selves in some way the children of these marriages would inherit the status of the higher ranking spouse. If the spouse of lower rank was not distinguished the children would accrue the lower status.
