Welcome to Earth Science Orientation

Goals of the Program District goal: to increase accelerated student achievement, participation, and offerings Increase levels of distinction performance NYS Ed. Mandate: 2 accelerated course offerings at the middle level Opportunity for additional higher level courses

Instruction Class meets daily Labs – In Class –NYS labs – state requires that each student planning to take NYS Regents exam must complete 1200 minutes of laboratory work. (approx. 30 labs) NYS credit is given for a 65% or better for each lab.

What if lab requirements are not met? Any student who does not meet the lab criteria will not be permitted to take the NYS Regents exam

Grading Students receive a numerical grade... **(It will be weighted(1.05) when they get to high school to calculate class rank.) **(Students will take the Regents Exam in June, they will not take the Intermediate Level Science Assessment.)

Graduation Requirements Pass the NYS Regents Earth Science exam with a grade of 65% or better Complete a minimum of three years of Regents science, although the expectation is higher for these students, due to this early opportunity.

We encourage Continuation of science through the end of high school –Regents Physics –Honors courses (Bio, Chem, Physics) –AP courses –IB

We are all in this together! Please emphasize the importance of school: right now, this is their job. They need to work hard and do their best. These grades will be included in high school transcripts! We encourage students to use the time at the end of each school day to come to science for help when/if needed. Come to school regularly – and – be ready to make up missed assignments promptly. Feel free to ask questions as they arise.

We hope you and your child have an enjoyable, challenging and successful experience.
