FEDERAL GRANTS AND WORK STUDY 1

STUDENTS WILL DEFINE THE TERMS “GRANTS” AND “WORK STUDY” AND REVIEW STRATEGIES FOR MAXIMIZING FINANCIAL AID. STUDENTS WILL PREPARE SHORT PRESENTATIONS ABOUT A SPECIFIC FEDERAL GRANT OR WORK STUDY PROGRAM. STUDENT WILL UNDERSTAND BASIC FACTS ABOUT DIFFERENT GRANT PROGRAMS AND WORK STUDY THROUGH THEIR GROUP PRESENTATIONS. Lesson Objectives 2

Breakout 1: Recap and Financial Aid 101 (10 minutes) 3 Directions: Complete and discuss the “Financial Aid 101” handout.

Breakout 2: Financial Aid Presentation Prep (15 minutes) 4 Directions: Each group will be assigned to research a specific aid program and will have 10 minutes to prepare a 1 minute presentation focusing on the key characteristics of that financial aid. Students will use the “Financial Aid Comparison Table” and “Financial Aid Reference Materials” to get started.

Breakout 3: Financial Aid Presentations (15 minutes) 5 Directions: Each group will present and share key takeaways of the assigned aid program.

Reflect and Review (5 minutes) 6 Individually complete your “Student Reflection” handout. Then spend 2-3 minutes in your small group sharing what you learned or how you can apply today’s workshop content. Think about: What information resonated with you about today’s workshop? What information was new to you? What information was most helpful to learn about? Why? What knowledge can you pass on or share with family members? Be ready to share your key learnings with the class.

Closing (2 minutes) 7 HOMEWORK: Talk with parent(s) about the similarities and differences between grants and work study. PRE-WORK FOR THE NEXT WORKSHOP:
