Metric The whole world uses metric units of measurement!
Metric All metric measurement units contain either the words meter, liter, or gram as the base word.
Linear/Length We use length to measure how long something is or to measure distance.
Linear/Length Some tools to measure length: Ruler, measuring tape, yardstick, meter stick, odometer
Metric
Linear/Length Millimeter- about the thickness of a dime. Centimeter (cm)- about the width of a Reese’s pieces
Linear/Length Decimeter (dm)- This is 10 centimeters or about the width of an adult’s hand.
Linear/Length Meter (m)- About the distance from one hand to another when you stretch your arms. 100 cm = 1 meter
Linear/Length Kilometer (km)- 1,000 meters. About the distance you can walk in 15 minutes.
US Customary Used in the United States
Linear/Length Inch (in.)- distance from thumb to first knuckle Foot (ft)- size of a ruler or height of a cat
Linear/Length Yard (yd)- about the length of a baseball bat Mile- distance you can walk in 20 minutes.
Mass When we measure mass we weigh something.

Mass Milligram- About the mass of a grain of salt.
Mass Gram (g)- is the mass of a dollar bill Kilogram (kg)- is about the mass of a baseball bat
US Customary
Mass Ounce (oz)- the weight of a slice of bread Pound (lb)- the weight of a loaf of bread Ton- the mass of a bread truck
Liquid/Capacity Measures volume Tools: Graduated Cylinder; measuring cup, metric measuring cup
Metric
Liquid/Capacity Milliliter (ml)- used to measure medicine. Liter (l)- half a two liter of pop
US Customary
Liquid/Capacity Fluid Ounce (oz)- measurement for baby bottles Cup (c) -8 ounces
Liquid/Capacity Pint (p)- 2 cups Quart (qt)- 2 pints, 4 cups Gallon (g)- 4 quarts
Temperature Measures how hot or cold something is Tools: Thermometer
Metric
Temperature Celsius (C)- Water freezes at 0 o C and boils at 100 o C
US Customary
Temperature Fahrenheit (F)- water freezes at 32 o F and boils at 212 o F
