Metric The whole world uses metric units of measurement!

Metric All metric measurement units contain either the words meter, liter, or gram as the base word.

Linear/Length We use length to measure how long something is or to measure distance.

Linear/Length Some tools to measure length: Ruler, measuring tape, yardstick, meter stick, odometer

Metric

Linear/Length Millimeter- about the thickness of a dime. Centimeter (cm)- about the width of a Reese’s pieces

Linear/Length Decimeter (dm)- This is 10 centimeters or about the width of an adult’s hand.

Linear/Length Meter (m)- About the distance from one hand to another when you stretch your arms. 100 cm = 1 meter

Linear/Length Kilometer (km)- 1,000 meters. About the distance you can walk in 15 minutes.

US Customary Used in the United States

Linear/Length Inch (in.)- distance from thumb to first knuckle Foot (ft)- size of a ruler or height of a cat

Linear/Length Yard (yd)- about the length of a baseball bat Mile- distance you can walk in 20 minutes.

Mass When we measure mass we weigh something.

Mass Weighing Tools: Scale or balance

Metric

Mass Milligram- About the mass of a grain of salt.

Mass Gram (g)- is the mass of a dollar bill Kilogram (kg)- is about the mass of a baseball bat

US Customary

Mass Ounce (oz)- the weight of a slice of bread Pound (lb)- the weight of a loaf of bread Ton- the mass of a bread truck

Liquid/Capacity Measures volume Tools: Graduated Cylinder; measuring cup, metric measuring cup

Metric

Liquid/Capacity Milliliter (ml)- used to measure medicine. Liter (l)- half a two liter of pop

US Customary

Liquid/Capacity Fluid Ounce (oz)- measurement for baby bottles Cup (c) -8 ounces

Liquid/Capacity Pint (p)- 2 cups Quart (qt)- 2 pints, 4 cups Gallon (g)- 4 quarts

Temperature Measures how hot or cold something is Tools: Thermometer

Metric

Temperature Celsius (C)- Water freezes at 0 o C and boils at 100 o C

US Customary

Temperature Fahrenheit (F)- water freezes at 32 o F and boils at 212 o F
