Apprenticeships

Basic Data Apprenticeships still have low take-up nationally; in 2013 – 3.2% of 16 year olds, – 6.2% of 17 year olds and – 8.4% of 18 year olds In 2012/13, 114,000 young people started apprenticeships – 80, year olds started intermediate apprenticeships (level 2), while – 33,100 started advanced apprenticeships (level 3)

Ealing Take up in London lower than national average In Ealing in 2013, 280 Apprenticeship starts aged were recorded, (av 90 per year gp) Of the original 2800 per year group that means only 3.2 % will access an apprenticeship by age 18 Ealing has Pathways Programme and Training Providers who specialise in Apprenticeship and pre-Apprenticeship pathways

Entry points for Ealing learners After GCSEs – to Intermediate or Advanced Age 17, after a one-year Level 2 to Intermediate Age 17 after AS levels, to Advances or Intermediate Age 18 after A levels or L3 vocational, to Higher Apprenticeship Age 18/19 after to any appropriate level Traineeships (pre-app) available for those needing boost to employability Ealing Council Pathways Programme – successful pre- apprenticeship programme for vulnerable young people Employers seem to prefer older applicants, but some employer schemes target 16-18s

9 | Presentation title Applying for an Apprenticeship You can also download the free smartphone app ‘AV Search’

Issues Who do we expect to take up Apprenticeships in Ealing? How well are young people supported to apply for Apprenticeships and attend selection days? How many young people from Ealing access ‘top’ apprenticeships e.g BT, utilities, transport, IT and technical? How well informed are young people in sixth forms about Higher Apprenticeships in London? How can we encourage teachers, parents and students to view apprenticeships as a real alternative to A levels?
