The United Nations Global Compact is a strategic policy initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti- corruption. UN GLOBAL COMPACT MISSION STATEMENT

Human Rights Principle 1Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and Principle 2:Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses. Labour Principle 3Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining; Principle 4Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labor; Principle 5Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labor; and Principle 6Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation. Environment Principle 7Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges; Principle 8Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and Principle 9Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies. Anti-Corruption Principle 10Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery. UN GLOBAL COMPACT 10 Universal Principles

UN GLOBAL COMPACT VISION & GOALS Promotes partnerships of businesses and civil society in a multi-stakeholder platform for responsible growth Brings private sector and civil society in action for MDG completion through social and environmental objectives on business agenda “Corporate citizenship is not just about how money is spent, it’s also about how money is made.” Translates global UN values in business practices for a better workplace, for a corruption free market and for cohesive communities Contributes to a more sustainable and inclusive global economy

UN GLOBAL COMPACT HISTORY Launched on 26 July 2000 in New York with roughly 40 businesses Built on fundamental principles of the: UN Declaration of Human Rights (adopted by Iraq in 1948) ILO Declaration (adopted along with core Conventions of the ILO: C29 (Forced Labour) (ratified 1962), C98 (Right to Organize and Collective Bargaining) (ratified 1962), C100 (Equal Remuneration) (ratified 1963), C111 (Discrimination, Employment and Occupation) (ratified 1959), C138 (Minimum Age Convention) (ratified 1985), C182 (Elimination of the Worst forms of Child Labour) (ratified 2001) Rio Declaration ( United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Rio de Janeiro, 1992, acceded 2009) and Kyoto Protocol to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (2009)) UN Convention Against Corruption (ratified in 2008)
