 Photosynthesis  Photosynthesis- A process by which plants convert sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into chemical energy, glucose (sugar), and oxygen  Chloroplast  Chloroplast- A cell organelle containing chlorophyll where photosynthesis takes place.  Chlorophyll  Chlorophyll- A green molecule which uses light energy from sunlight to change water and carbon dioxide gas into glucose and oxygen

Chlorophyll is the green pigment inside the chloroplasts of plant cells that makes leaves green!

CO 2

Sugar + O 2 O2O2O2O2

The Xylem A transport tissue with the basic function to transport water from the roots throughout the plant. 8 Xylem is found in the roots and stems of plants and is like a tiny tube. The “strings” in celery are xylem tubes.

How is a xylem in a plant similar to a circulatory system in a human? 10

A process where plants make their own food. 11

Photosynthesis occurs in the leaves of plants. 12 Can you name the structure in a leaf that is responsible for photosynthesis?

Oxygen 15

Write to complete this sentence: During photosynthesis, _________ energy is converted into __________ energy. 16

 Animals use:  Sugar (from producers/plants)  Oxygen (from producers/plants)  Plants use:  Carbon dioxide (from animals)
