Camouflage is an Adaptation

Before we get started see if you can find Waldo in these pictures. This will test your predator skills of looking closely and finding something that is very well hidden!

Can you see the sandfish?

Can you see the bobcat?

Can you see the insect?

Why are these animals hard to find? Camouflage is used to help animals attack their prey as well as defend themselves from predators.

If you are a predator, you can surprise the animal you want to eat. Have you ever tried to scare someone? What did you do? Did you try and hide and then jump out? That is what camouflage is allowing the animal to do. A physical adaptation helps the animal to hide!

This predator is on the prowl. What are its adaptations that make him a good hunter?

It is important to remember that some animals can only blend into one surrounding. Look at this picture of the snowshoe hare in the snow. Then look at the hare in the forest. Which place is the hare safest from predators? In the snow or in the forest?

These tree frogs are both hiding for defense and to prey on their food. I can count four frogs. How many did you see?

Why are these weasels different colors? Write about the adaptations of these weasels. Did you say, camouflage? Correct!

Check How does the adaptation of an animal’s coloring or outer covering help it to survive?
