 When considering complementary and/or alternative treatment for patients the health care professional:  Considers if the treatment is effective and that scientific evidence is available to prove the safety of the product/therapy.  Is knowledgeable about the actual or potential danger including side effects of the CAM treatment Professional Standards

 Natural products marketed as dietary supplements can be unsafe and may interact with prescription medication  Dietary supplements are not standardized, whereby varying from one batch to the next.  Dietary supplements maybe adulterated or contaminated with heavy metal Safety Considerations
